The IAS Civil Service Exam (CSE) is performed by UPSC or Union Public Service Commission and is completed in three stages- Prelims, Mains and Interview or Personality Test.

Best IAS Books for UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam Preparation

The Prelims consists of two papers, one is General Studies-I and another is General Studies-II or CSAT. Both of these papers are objective type and have negative markings. 

Polity

1) Read NCERT 11th  standard book.

2) Go over “Indian Polity” by M. Laxmikanth

History

1) Read “India’s Ancient Past” by Ram Sharan Sharma for Ancient History

2) Read ” A History of Medieval India” by Satish Chandra for Medieval History

3) Read “A Brief History of Modern India(Spectrum)” for Modern History

Geography

1) Go over NCERT 11 and 12 standard books.

2) For mapping knowledge follow Atlas by Oxford.

3) Go after any coaching notes as a supplement.

Economics

1) 11 standard NCERT book is a staple for covering this.

2) “The Indian Economy” by Sanjiv Verma is recommended for the prelims.

3) Follow Eco Survey and Budget for better knowledge.

4) Follow coaching notes as a supplement.

Environment

1) Read newspapers and follow current affairs.

2) Any coaching study material does the work.

Science and Technology 

1) Keeping track of current affairs and regular newspaper reading is enough.

2) Follow notes of any coaching material.

Best IAS Books for UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam Preparation

The Mains consist of 9 papers, among them there are 7 merit-based papers which are  Paper-1 for essay, Paper-2 is General Studies-I, Paper-3 is General Studies-II, Paper-4 is General Studies-III, Paper-5 is General Studies-IV,  Paper-6 is for Optional Subject-1 and  Paper-7 is Optional Subject -2, which differs for every candidate.

The two qualifying papers are Paper-A for any regional language including in the 8th Schedule of Constitution and Paper- B is for English.

General Studies – 1

Art & Culture

  1. Follow NCERT 11th Standard book.

    i)An Introduction to Indian Art from NCERT.

  1. ii) Ancient and Medieval India from NCERT.
  2. Read “Indian Art and Culture” by Nitin Singhania.
  3. Make handwritten notes from them.

History

1) For Modern History read “A Brief History of Modern India(Spectrum)”

2) For World History rely on NCERT both 11 and 12 standards.

3) For Post- Independence follow “India Since Independence” a book by Bipan Chandra.

Geography

  • Follow NCERT of 11th and 12th standard. It is very important.
  •  Fundamentals of Physical Geography from class-xi NCERT
  •  India: Physical Environment from class – xi NCERT

Fundamentals of Human Geography from class- xii NCERT

  •  India: People and Economy from class- xii NCERT
  • Follow PMF IAS Physical Geography and coaching notes for additional information.
  • Keep a record of the mapping of current issues.

Society

1) NCERT 11th and 12th are sufficient.

2) Read newspapers daily for current topics.

3) Go over coaching notes for supplements.

General  Studies- 2

Polity and Constitution

1) Read NCERT books of  11th standard.

  •  Indian Constitution at Work from NCERT.
  • Political Theory from NCERT.

2) Cover the book “Indian Polity” by M. Laxmikanth. It is a basic sauce to cover polity

Governance

1) Blindly follow the 2nd Administrative Reform Commission (ARC) Reports.

  •  Among them give much importance to report- 1,4,6,9,10,11 and 12.

2) Additional current coaching notes are beneficial as it is a dynamic paper.

Social Justice

1) For this topic current affairs are sufficient.

International Relations

1) For the base NCERT 12th standard is important.

  • Contemporary World Politics from NCERT.

2) Candidates’ key focus should be on the current related topics.

General Studies- 3 

Economic Development

1) Give the most importance to NCERT 11th standard book.

  • Indian Economic Development from NCERT.

2) “Economic Development & Policies in India” by Jain & Ohri is a standard book for Mains.

3) Keep track of the Economic Survey and Budgets.

4) Follow the latest Government schemes.

5) Additional coaching notes as a supplement to Economics.

Environment and Bio-Diversity 

1) NCERT Biology book of class 12th.

  • Last 4 chapters, including unit 10 Ecology from NCERT.

3) Follow PMF IAS Environment notes.

  • Focus more on current issues from it.

Security and Disaster Management

1) Read the book “Challenges to Internal Security of India” by Ashok Kumar.

2) For Disaster  Management read IGNOU notes or any coaching notes. 

Science and Technology

1) Any updated coaching booklet will help the candidates.

2) Newspaper and Monthly Magazines will help.

  • Follow the latest developments from these.
  • Give prior importance to the topics of Space Science, Bio-Technology, Nano-   Technology,  Robotics and ICT.

General Studies -4 

Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude

1) Follow the book “The Lexicon for Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude” for this paper.

2) Follow any coaching material as an accompaniment.

Current Affairs

1) For Daily Current Affairs read newspapers daily, read any monthly magazine, which is sufficient for the paper.

2) Track a record of the Yojanas given by the Government.

Essay

1) For the essay need to take command over current affairs, general studies and ethics.

2) Follow the book “Fundamental of Essay Writing” by Anudeep Durishetty for better knowledge of this paper.

  • The syllabus and Previous Year’s Questions (PYQs) are the first and foremost crucial components of the resource list.
