Bhojapur

Bhojpur is a medieval Indian site on the Betwa river near Bhopal.

The town was founded by King Bhoja (1010-1055 CE) of the Parmara Rajputs. Moreover, he constructed three large dams and a Shiva temple called Bhojeswar temple on a hill.

The dams were built to contain the water from the rivers and rivulets into a reservoir.

The first dam was on the Betwa river, which collected water in a depression formed by surrounding hills.

The third dam was built on the Kaliasot river in Bhopal, which too was established by king Bhoja to augment the water levels in the Betwa dam reservoir.

However, the dams were breached in the 15th century after Hoshang Shah emptied the reservoir.

Other notable site features include the Parvati cave and king Bhoja’s palace.
