1. India showcases PM Gatishakti National Masterplan at Asian Development Bank’s 2023 Regional Cooperation and Integration Conference
Topic: GS3 – infrastructure development.
Context:
- India presented the PM Gatishakti National Master Plan at the ‘2023 Regional Cooperation and Integration Conference’ organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Tbilisi, Georgia.
- The conference aimed to explore ways to integrate spatial transformation and area-centric development with Economic Corridor Development (ECD) and enhance regional cooperation.
About PM Gatishakti:
- It is an ambitious plan to integrate and strengthen India’s infrastructure.
- It will focus on integrating road, rail, air, port, public transport, waterways, and logistics infrastructure.
- The government will invest 100 lakh crore (USD 135 billion) in the plan.
- The plan will create more than 10 million jobs.
- It will reduce logistics costs and boost economic growth.
- It will help India become a global economic power.
- The plan is being implemented through a digital platform called the “Gati Shakti Digital Platform”.
Here are some of the specific projects that are being undertaken under PM Gati Shakti:
- Expansion of the national highway network to 2 lakh kilometers (124,274 miles).
- Construction of 100 new airports and heliports.
- Development of 11 industrial corridors.
- Augmentation of the railway network to carry 1,600 tonnes of cargo per train.
- Expansion of the electricity transmission network to 454,200 circuit kilometers.
- Increase in renewable energy capacity to 225 GW.
- Construction of 17,000 kilometers of gas pipelines.
- Extending 4G connectivity to all villages.

2. Shri Bhupender Yadav emphasizes stronger partnerships, increasing investment and sharing responsibility for overcoming air pollution.
Topic: GS3 – air pollution.
Context:
- Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change and Labour and Employment, Shri Bhupender Yadav, announced the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2023 awards in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
More about the news:
- In the first category (million-plus population), Indore secured the first rank, followed by Agra and Thane.
- In the second category (3-10 lakhs population), Amravati ranked first, followed by Moradabad and Guntur.
- In the third category (less than 3 lakhs population), Parwanoo secured the first rank, followed by Kala Amb and Angul.
- The event marked the 4th International Day of Clean Air for blue skies (Swachh Vayu Diwas 2023) with the global theme “Together for Clean Air.”
Government initiatives for improving air quality in the country:
- Shri Yadav highlighted the government’s commitment to ensure clean air for all citizens, with the announcement of a plan to improve air quality in over 100 cities in India.
- The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) was launched in 2019 as a national-level strategy to reduce air pollution in India.
- NCAP focuses on city-specific action plans and has identified 131 cities for targeted air quality improvement measures.
- Shri Yadav emphasized the need for coordinated efforts from all stakeholders to achieve the objectives of the National Clean Air Programme.
- The Ministry has launched the “PRANA” portal to monitor the implementation of NCAP and share best practices among cities.
- The “Mission LiFE” (Lifestyle for Environment) aims to promote environmentally friendly lifestyles and create a global network of individuals committed to this cause.
- The SATAT scheme focuses on setting up Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) production plants to provide a green fuel alternative.
