1. Cyclone Biparjoy set to hit Kutch; Gujarat gears up

A cyclonic storm named Biparjoy is expected to make landfall on Gujarat’s Kutch coast on Thursday.

Issue:

The State government has deployed teams from national and State disaster response forces in coastal areas to prepare for the storm.

Shelters will be set up in six coastal districts in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions.
-
The exact location of the storm’s landing is still uncertain, but it is predicted to occur between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan around noon on June 15.

Biparjoy is expected to have a maximum sustained wind speed of 125 kmph to 135 kmph, with gusts reaching 150 kmph.

The districts of Kutch, Jamnagar, Morbi, Gir Somnath, Porbandar, and Devbhumi Dwarka are likely to be impacted by the cyclone.

The Chief Minister directed the deployment of NDRF and SDRF teams and other precautionary measures in these districts.

2. Particulate pollution increasing in Rajasthan’s cities

Rajasthan is facing a multi-pollutant crisis, with increasing levels of particulate pollution and gaseous pollutants.

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) conducted an analysis that revealed the worsening air quality in both big and small cities and towns in Rajasthan.

The region lacks adequate infrastructure for pollution control across all sectors, contributing to the persistent pollution problem.

Particulate pollution has been on the rise in cities like Jaipur, Kota, and Udaipur, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Jodhpur is identified as the most polluted city, while Kota is the second among the five non-attainment cities in the state.

Ground-level ozone, which is becoming a challenge in non-attainment cities, requires robust monitoring to assess the risk.

Nitrogen dioxide pollution, associated with traffic flow, has increased in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur, exceeding 2019 levels by 24% to 51%.

The report emphasizes the need for plans to transition to clean energy in industry, transport, power plants, and households.

3. Private sector collaboration is the next great phase of Indo-U.S. defence ties

5. Neolithic-era celt found in Tamil Nadu village

A neolithic celt was found in Poothinatham village in Dharmapuri district during ongoing archaeological excavations.

A. Sivananandam, Deputy Director of the Department of Archaeology, described the discovery as significant.

The celt was made of Doloraid stone and was used either as a plough or an axe.
-
It was unearthed on June 10 at a depth of 36 cm from the surface.

The celt measures 22 cm in length, with a maximum width of 4.2 cm and a minimum width of 3.2 cm.

6. Nothing wrong in a nuclear deal with the West: Khamenei

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated that reaching a deal with the West regarding Iran’s disputed nuclear work is possible if the country’s nuclear infrastructure remains intact.

He emphasized that the agreement should not interfere with Iran’s nuclear industry and that the country should continue its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.

Indirect talks between Tehran and Washington to revive the 2015 nuclear accord have been at a stalemate since September, with both sides accusing each other of making unreasonable demands.

Both Iran and the United States denied a recent report suggesting they were nearing an interim deal in which Iran would limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.
