1. Population-based delimitation unfair to southern States

Topic: GS2.

Context:

      • K.T. Rama Rao, working president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has called for people and politicians in southern states to unite against the proposed delimitation of constituencies in 2026.

Issue:

      • It is being argued that the southern states, which have followed population control policies as advised by the central government, are now facing potential injustice in the delimitation process.

      • Rama Rao highlights that the northern states, which did not prioritize population control, stand to benefit from the delimitation exercise due to higher population growth.

      • The southern states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana have achieved success in controlling population growth and have made progress in various human development indices compared to the northern states.

      • Rama Rao emphasizes that despite contributing 35% to the country’s GDP with only 18% of the population, the southern states are being unfairly treated in the proposed delimitation based on population.

      • He criticizes the delimitation as irrational and warns that it could lead to disparities in the federal structure.

      • Southern states feel the need to raise a voice against the impending injustice faced by the southern states.

2. Scientist team discovers new exoplanet with mass 13 times that of Jupiter

Topic: GS3 – Science and technology.

Context:

      • An international team of scientists led by Prof. Abhijit Chakraborty at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, has discovered a new Jupiter-size exoplanet.

Issue:

      • This exoplanet has the highest density known to date, with a density of approximately 14 g/cm3.

      • The exoplanet has a mass 13 times that of Jupiter, classifying it as a massive giant exoplanet.

      • The discovery was made using the indigenously made PRL Advanced Radial-velocity Abu-sky Search spectrograph (PARAS) at the Gurushikhar Observatory in Mt. Abu.

      • The exoplanet was found orbiting the star TOI4603 or HD 245134, initially identified as a possible candidate by NASA’s The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite.

      • This discovery is significant as the exoplanet falls into the transition mass range between massive giant planets and low-mass brown dwarfs.

      • Currently, there are fewer than five known exoplanets in this mass range.

      • The discovery provides valuable insights into the formation and characteristics of massive exoplanets.

3. The shift in the U.S.’s approach to China.

Topic: GS2 – International relations.

Context:

      • The U.S. is shifting its policy on China from decoupling to de-risking.

Issue:

      • De-risking aims to have resilient and effective supply chains to avoid coercion from any country.

      • The Biden administration has added its own features to the China policy inherited from Trump, replacing “decoupling” with “de-risking.”

      • Recent speeches and legislations reflect this new approach, focusing on areas that undercut national security and industrial competence.

      • The shift from decoupling to de-risking is announced in the wake of significant geopolitical events, including the pandemic, U.S.-China tensions, and China’s rise in power.

      • De-risking could help the U.S. gain support from European allies and counter China’s influence without completely decoupling.

      • Geopolitical ramifications include closer coordination among allies, skepticism from China, and potential dilution of U.S. focus on the Indo-Pacific region.

4. Government drops plans to host SCO summit in Delhi, will now be in virtual format.

Topic: GS2 – International relations.

Context:

      • India has changed its plans to chair the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in-person and will now host it in a virtual format.

      • The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the change just a month before the summit.

Issue:

      • The virtual summit will be chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 4, 2023.

      • All SCO member states, including China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, have been invited to attend via video conference.

      • Turkmenistan is a permanent invitee, and observer states such as Iran, Belarus, and Mongolia have also been invited.

      • The reason for the change was not provided, but sources suggest it may be due to scheduling difficulties and the lack of final confirmations from some SCO leaders.

      • The ongoing war in Ukraine and recent drone attacks in Kyiv and Moscow may have impacted the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

5. Fresh excavation reveals pre-Mauryan era signs in Delhi’s Purana Qila site.

Topic: GS1 – ancient history.

Context:

      • Fresh excavations at Delhi’s Purana Qila (Old Fort) have revealed evidence of the city’s continuous history since the pre-Mauryan era.

Issue:

      • The findings include shards of Painted Gray Ware pottery, usually dated to around 1200 BC to 600 BC.

      • The Purana Qila is believed by many to be the site of Indraprastha mentioned in the Mahabharat.

      • The excavations have also uncovered a 900-year-old Vaikuntha Vishnu from the Rajput period, a terracotta plaque of Goddess Gaja Lakshmi from the Gupta period, a 2,500-year-old terracotta ring well from the Mauryan period, and a four-room complex from the Sunga-Kushan period dating back 2,300 years.

      • Numerous coins and seals have been discovered, indicating the site’s role as a trade center.

      • The Purana Qila will soon be reopened, according to Culture Minister G. Kishan Reddy.

      • These excavations represent the third round of excavations at the site, following previous efforts in 2013-14 and 2017-18.

      • The site may host one of the accompanying events during the G-20 leadership summit in September.

6. Chinese mission with first civilian reaches space

Topic: GS3 – Science and technology.

Context:

      • China launched three astronauts to its Tiangong space station, including the first Chinese civilian to go to space.

Issue:

      • The Shenzhou-16 crew took off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre using a Long March 2F rocket.

      • They successfully docked at the Tianhe core module of the space station several hours after the launch.

      • China has heavily invested in its space program to catch up with the United States and Russia and has plans for crewed missions to the Moon by 2030.

      • Tiangong is a crucial part of China’s space program, which has achieved milestones such as landing robotic rovers on Mars and the Moon.

      • The launch and docking were deemed successful, with the astronauts reported to be in good condition.

7. India’s growth momentum likely to sustain in FY24: RBI

Topic: GS3 – Indian economy

Context:

      • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) expects India’s growth momentum to continue in the fiscal year 2023-24.

Issue:

      • The central bank attributes the sustained growth to easing inflationary pressures, sound macroeconomic policies, lower commodity prices, a strong financial sector, and opportunities arising from global supply chain realignment.

      • However, the RBI highlights potential downside risks to growth, including slowing global growth, geopolitical tensions, and financial market volatility.

      • The central bank emphasizes the importance of implementing structural reforms to enhance India’s medium-term growth potential.

      • Despite global challenges, the RBI estimates that the Indian economy grew by 7% in real GDP during the fiscal year 2022-23, with resilient performance in the agriculture and allied sectors.

8. Hardening interest rates, geopolitical risks impacting FDI inflows.

Topic: GS3 – Indian economy

Context:

      • Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows into India in 2022-23 were impacted by hardening interest rates globally and worsening geopolitical situation.

Issue:

      • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) will analyze the reasons for the contraction in FDI in sectors such as computer hardware and software, construction, education, automobiles, and metallurgical industries.

      • The decline in FDI is not due to protectionist policies but is a result of a combination of higher interest rates and increased geopolitical risks globally, leading to a decrease in investment appetite.

      • These five sectors accounted for $30 billion in total FDI in the previous fiscal year, and FDI inflows in these sectors almost halved in 2022-23.

      • FDI equity inflows declined by 22% to $46 billion in the fiscal year 2022-23, with investments in the January-March quarter experiencing a significant drop of 40.5% to $9.28 billion.
