2. GREYWATER MANAGEMENT IN THE COUNTRY

Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.

Context:

  • Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) [SBM(G)] Phase-II is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme launched in 2020-21.
  • The objectives of SBM(G) Phase-II are to sustain the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and implement Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) arrangements in all villages by 2024-25 (ODF to ODF Plus).
  • Greywater Management (GWM) is an integral component of SBM(G) Phase-II, focusing on managing greywater near the source using sustainable and economical techniques like soak-pits, leach-pits, magic-pits, or kitchen gardens.

What is Greywater:

  • Greywater refers to the wastewater generated from domestic activities such as washing dishes, laundry, bathing, and handwashing. It is distinct from “blackwater,” which includes wastewater from toilets and is more heavily contaminated with human waste and pathogens.
  • Greywater is relatively less polluted compared to blackwater, as it does not contain fecal matter. However, it may contain soaps, detergents, oils, and other chemicals used in household cleaning and personal hygiene. As such, greywater can still have some level of contaminants and should be treated or managed properly to avoid environmental pollution and health risks.
  • Greywater can be reused and recycled for non-potable purposes such as irrigation, flushing toilets, and cleaning.

About Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) [SBM(G)]:

The Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) [SBM(G)] is a flagship program launched by the Government of India on October 2, 2014, with the aim of achieving universal sanitation coverage and making India open defecation free (ODF).

  • Open Defecation Free (ODF) India: The primary objective of SBM(G) is to eradicate the practice of open defecation across rural India. The mission aims to provide access to toilets to every household, thereby ensuring a clean and hygienic environment.
  • Sanitation Coverage: SBM(G) seeks to improve sanitation coverage in rural areas by promoting the construction of individual household toilets (IHHLs) and community sanitary complexes.
  • Behavior Change: The mission emphasizes behavior change communication to create awareness about the importance of using toilets and maintaining proper hygiene practices.
  • Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM): SBM(G) Phase-II focuses on sustaining ODF status and implementing solid and liquid waste management arrangements in villages to promote cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
  • Greywater Management (GWM): SBM(G) Phase-II also includes the management of greywater generated from households through sustainable and economical techniques.
