1. Government to provide assistance to construct 3 crore rural and urban houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)

Context

The Indian government, through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, has successfully completed 4.21 crore houses with basic amenities for poor families over the past decade. In response to rising demand, the Cabinet has approved assistance for constructing an additional 3 crore houses for eligible households.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY):

Components: It has two main components – PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U) and PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G) for urban and rural areas respectively. Target: The goal was to ensure “Housing for All” by 2022. Beneficiaries: Targets economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG). Subsidy Scheme: Offers credit-linked subsidy for housing loans under CLSS (Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme). Basic Amenities: Houses built under PMAY come with basic amenities like household toilets, LPG connections, electricity, and tap water through convergence with other schemes. Technology: Promotes eco-friendly and sustainable construction technologies. Achievements: As of now, 4.21 crore houses have been completed under the scheme. Recent Development: The government has recently approved assistance for constructing an additional 3 crore houses to meet rising demand.
