1. Livestock Sector is consistently growing at a high Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.67% during 2014-15 to 2021-22

Context:

  • Upadhyaya emphasized that the livestock sector has been consistently growing at a high Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.67% from 2014-15 to 2021-22 (at constant prices).
  • The growth is attributed to various parameters within the Livestock Sector, including Dairy, Bovine (cattle), Poultry, Goatery, and Piggery.
  • Notably, the livestock sector made a significant contribution of approximately 30.19% to the total Gross Value Added (GVA) of the agriculture and allied sectors during the year 2021-22, measured at constant prices.

Importance of livestock sector for India:

  • Economic Contribution:
  1. Livestock sector contributed around 30.19% to the total agriculture and allied sector Gross Value Added (GVA) during 2021-22.
  2. It has consistently grown at a high Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.67% from 2014-15 to 2021-22 (at constant prices).
  • Employment Generation:
  1. The sector provides livelihoods for a significant portion of the population, with millions of households engaged in animal husbandry and related activities.

  2. They contribute to addressing malnutrition and improving overall nutrition outcomes.

  1. Livestock rearing offers farmers diversified income sources, reducing their dependence solely on crop farming.
  2. It acts as a risk mitigation strategy against fluctuations in crop yields and prices.
  • Rural Development:
  1. The livestock sector plays a vital role in the development of rural economies by generating income and improving infrastructure and services.
  2. It can help bridge the urban-rural economic divide.
  • Export Potential:
  1. Livestock products like meat, dairy, and leather have significant export potential, contributing to foreign exchange earnings for the country.

2. Number of Jan Dhan Accounts Cross 50 Crore.

Context:

  • As of August 9, 2023, the total number of Jan Dhan accounts has surpassed 50 crore.
  • Within these accounts, 56% of the accounts belong to women beneficiaries.
  • The majority of accounts, constituting 67%, have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas.

Importance of PM Jan Dhan accounts:

  • Financial Inclusion: Reaches unbanked and underbanked individuals, promoting financial inclusion.
  • Gender Empowerment: 56% accounts held by women, fostering gender equality and financial empowerment.
  • Rural Development: 67% accounts in rural/semi-urban areas, supporting rural economic growth.
  • DBT Efficiency: Over 5.5 crore accounts receive direct benefits, reducing leakages and corruption.
  • Savings and Literacy: Encourages saving, financial discipline, and awareness through literacy campaigns.
  • Economic Growth: Enables credit flow to small businesses, fostering local economic development.
  • Reduced Informality: Reduces reliance on informal channels, enhancing transparency.
  • Government Synergy: Aligns with Digital India, Make in India, strengthening national initiatives.
