1. Codex Alimentarius Commission Praises India’s Standards on Millets
Topic: GS3.
Context:
- India’s Standards on Millets, presented at the 46th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) in Rome, have been praised by the international food safety and quality standard-setting body.
- The Codex Alimentarius Commission, created by WHO and FAO with 188 member countries, has accepted India’s proposal for the development of global standards for millets.
More about Codex Alimentarius Commission:
- Mission: To protect consumer health and promote fair practices in the food trade.
- Established: 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
- Purpose: To develop and adopt international food standards, guidelines, and codes of practice.
- Structure: The Codex Alimentarius Commission is the governing body of the Codex Alimentarius Programme. It is composed of all Member Nations and Associate Members of FAO and WHO that are interested in international food standards. The Commission meets biennially to adopt standards and related texts.
- Activities: The Codex Alimentarius Commission develops and adopts international food standards, guidelines, and codes of practice through a series of steps, including:
- Submission of proposals for new work
- Preparation of draft standards by Codex committees
- Step Committee review and revision
- Benefits: The Codex Alimentarius Commission provides a number of benefits, including:
- Protecting consumer health:Codex standards help to ensure that food is safe and nutritious.
- Promoting fair trade practices:Codex standards provide a level playing field for food producers and exporters.
- Facilitating international trade:Codex standards help to reduce the costs of trade by harmonizing food regulations.
