Issue:

About Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC):

The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is an initiative launched by the Government of India to create a digital commerce ecosystem that is open, transparent, and inclusive. ONDC aims to democratise digital commerce by providing a level playing field for all stakeholders, including sellers, buyers, and service providers.

The key objectives of ONDC are as follows:

      • Interoperability: ONDC promotes interoperability among various digital commerce platforms, allowing seamless integration and data exchange. This enables sellers to connect and sell their products across multiple platforms, expanding their reach and business opportunities.

      • Fair and Transparent Pricing: ONDC aims to ensure fair and transparent pricing for sellers and buyers. It discourages discriminatory practices and promotes a competitive marketplace where prices are determined based on market dynamics.

      • Data Ownership and Privacy: ONDC emphasises data ownership and privacy, protecting the interests of sellers and buyers. It seeks to empower users by giving them control over their data and ensuring compliance with applicable data protection regulations.

      • Inclusivity: ONDC strives to be inclusive by providing opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), women entrepreneurs, and marginalised communities to participate in the digital commerce ecosystem. It aims to bridge the digital divide and enable their meaningful participation in the digital economy.

      • Flexible Work Arrangements: Providing flexible work options such as part-time work, job-sharing, telecommuting, and flexible working hours can enable women to balance work and family responsibilities more effectively.

      • Affordable and Quality Childcare: Expanding access to affordable and high-quality childcare facilities can alleviate the burden of childcare responsibilities on women, making it easier for them to participate in the labour force.

      • Maternity and Parental Leave: Implementing supportive maternity and parental leave policies that offer adequate leave duration, job security, and income protection can encourage women to remain in the workforce after having children.

      • Education and Skills Training: Promoting girls’ education and providing skills training programs for women can enhance their employability and enable them to access better job opportunities.

      • Addressing Gender Stereotypes: Challenging and breaking down gender stereotypes and biases in society and workplaces can create a more inclusive environment and encourage women to pursue a wide range of careers.

      • Mentorship and Networking Opportunities: Providing mentorship programs and networking opportunities for women can offer guidance, support, and access to professional networks, helping them advance in their careers.

      • Eliminating Discrimination and Harassment: Strictly enforcing laws against workplace discrimination and harassment based on gender, as well as creating safe and inclusive work environments, are crucial to promoting women’s participation in the labour force.

      • Promoting Women’s Entrepreneurship: Creating an enabling environment for women entrepreneurs through access to capital, business support services, and networks can encourage women to start and grow their businesses.

      • Leadership and Decision-Making Roles: Encouraging women’s representation in leadership and decision-making positions in both public and private sectors can inspire other women and help address gender imbalances in higher-level positions.
