Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was an Indian politician, academician, and founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which later evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He was born on July 6, 1901, in Kolkata, West Bengal, and passed away on June 23, 1953.
-
Dr. Mookerjee played a crucial role in the Indian independence movement and was a staunch advocate for the rights of Hindus and the integration of Jammu and Kashmir into India.

He served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet but later resigned due to differences on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

Dr. Mookerjee believed in the principles of cultural nationalism and emphasized the importance of preserving India’s cultural heritage.

He was a strong proponent of education and worked towards establishing educational institutions, including the Indian Statistical Institute and the Jadavpur University in Kolkata.

Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s contributions to the field of politics and his nationalist ideology continue to inspire and influence the BJP and its leaders.

2. Joha rice – the Nutraceutical of choice in diabetes management

Joha rice is an aromatic rice cultivated in the Northeastern region of India, known for its significant aroma and taste.

Traditional claims suggest that consumers of Joha rice have a low incidence of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, but scientific validation is needed.

Scientists at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology explored the nutraceutical properties of Joha rice.
-
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to prevent metabolic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.
-
Joha rice has been found to be effective in lowering blood glucose and preventing diabetes onset in diabetic rats.
-
Scented Joha rice has a more balanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids compared to non-scented varieties.

Rice bran oil made from Joha rice has been patented and claimed to be effective in diabetes management.

Joha rice is rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, and phenolics, including bioactive compounds like oryzanol, ferulic acid, tocotrienol, caffeic acid, catechuic acid, gallic acid, and tricin.

These compounds have reported antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and cardio-protective effects.
