1. New products & nutraceuticals added Under Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana

Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.

Context:

  • New products added to the PMBJP basket include Dapagliflozin 10mg & Metformin Hydrochloride(Extended Release) 1000mg Tablets for Diabetes, Jan Aushadhi Protein (High Protein) Powder, and Jan Aushadhi Protein for Women (Whey Protein Powder).
  • PMBI regularly analyzes market trends and includes medicines and nutraceuticals at affordable prices in Jan Aushadhi Kendras based on the analysis.

About Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana:

  • Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (JAN AUSHADHI) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India launched in 2008.
  • The primary objective of this initiative is to provide quality generic medicines at affordable prices to the common people, particularly the economically weaker sections of society.
  • JAP has been a huge success, with over 7,000 Jan Aushadhi stores operating across the country. The stores offer a wide range of generic medicines at up to 80% discount on the MRP of branded drugs.
  • Some of the key benefits of JAP include:
    1. Affordable generic medicines
    2. Wide range of medicines available
    3. Convenient locations
    4. Easy to use
    5. Quality assured

2. CAQM announces revision of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to further strengthen measures to combat sudden/ anticipated deterioration of air quality in NCR.

Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.

Context:

  • The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR & Adjoining Areas (CAQM) is committed to improving air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR).
  • To address air pollution challenges, the existing Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) has been revised.
  • The revised GRAP will be effective from 1st October 2023 across the entire NCR region.

About Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP):

The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is an emergency response mechanism implemented in the National Capital Region (NCR) of India to combat air pollution and improve air quality. It was introduced by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in collaboration with various state pollution control boards and environmental authorities.

Key features of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP):

  • Objective: The primary objective of GRAP is to address air pollution and its adverse impacts on public health and the environment in the NCR region.
  • Implementation: GRAP is activated based on the Air Quality Index (AQI) levels in Delhi. It categorizes various stages of air pollution based on AQI thresholds, ranging from “Moderate” to “Severe+,” indicating different levels of pollution severity.
  • Response Mechanism: Depending on the prevailing AQI category, specific actions and measures are prescribed to be implemented by various stakeholders, including government agencies, local authorities, and implementing bodies.
  • Timely Interventions: GRAP ensures that appropriate and timely interventions are undertaken to control pollution levels during different stages of air pollution severity.
  • Seasonal Focus: GRAP particularly emphasizes addressing pollution challenges during the winter season when the NCR experiences severe air pollution, primarily due to factors like stubble burning, temperature inversion, and increased emissions from various sources.

3. Update on PMSSY

Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.

Context:

  • The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) is implementing 22 new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and 75 projects for the upgradation of existing Government Medical Colleges/Institutions (GMCIs).
  • As part of the scheme, 157 Nursing Colleges are also being established, aiming to strengthen nursing education and healthcare services in the country.

Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) is a government initiative in India aimed at improving healthcare services and medical education in the country.

  • The primary objectives of PMSSY are to correct regional imbalances in the availability of affordable tertiary healthcare services and to enhance facilities for quality medical education.
  • The scheme has two components:
    1. Setting up new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
    2. Upgrading existing Government Medical Colleges/Institutions (GMCIs).
  • In addition to the main components, PMSSY also includes the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for “Establishment of new Medical College attached with existing District/Referral Hospitals.”
  • The scheme is an important step towards improving access to quality healthcare services, reducing regional disparities, and developing a skilled healthcare workforce in India.

4. Nyaya Vikas Portal.

Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.

Nyaya Vikas Portal:

  • Nyaya Vikas is an online monitoring system developed with technical assistance from the National Remote Sensing Centre of ISRO in India.
  • It is used to collect data on the progress and completion of court halls and residential units, as well as three new components: lawyers’ halls, complexes, and digital computer rooms.
  • The system leverages space technology to monitor construction projects through the Nyaya Vikas Web Portal and mobile app.
  • The web portal and mobile app named “Nyaya Vikas” were launched in 2018 for monitoring construction projects.
  • State Governments have appointed Nodal Officers and Surveyors & Moderators for each project to enter and upload data/information on the portal.
  • Geotagging of projects using the Nyaya Vikas mobile application allows better monitoring of judicial infrastructure projects.

5. NATIONAL WATERWAYS PROJECT

Topic: GS3 – Infrastructure projects.

Context:

  • 111 waterways, including 5 existing and 106 new, have been declared National Waterways (NWs) under the National Waterways Act, 2016 in India.
  • Action plans have been formulated for 26 viable NWs based on techno-economic feasibility studies and Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for cargo and passenger movement.

More about National Waterways Project:

  • The project aims to promote the use of inland waterways for cargo and passenger transportation, and to reduce the country’s dependence on road and rail transport.
  • The NWP was launched in 2016, and has since identified 111 waterways as potential national waterways. These waterways cover a total length of over 15,000 kilometers, and are spread across 24 states in India.
  • The NWP is expected to have a number of benefits for India. These benefits include:
    1. Reduced transportation costs: Inland waterways are a more cost-effective mode of transportation than road and rail. This is because the cost of fuel and maintenance is lower for water transport.
    2. Reduced pollution: Inland waterways are a more environmentally friendly mode of transportation than road and rail. This is because they produce less pollution, and they help to reduce congestion on roads and railways.
    3. Increased trade: Inland waterways can help to increase trade between different parts of India. This is because they provide a more efficient and cost-effective way to transport goods.
    4. Job creation: The NWP is expected to create millions of jobs in the construction, operation, and maintenance of inland waterways.
