1. Nataraja statue at Bharat Mandapam will stand as a testament to India’s age-old artistry and traditions: PM

Context:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked on the Nataraja statue at Bharat Mandapam.
- He shared a post by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA).
- The Prime Minister emphasized that the statue reflects India’s rich history and culture.
About Nataraja sculpture:
- The Nataraja sculpture is a renowned and iconic representation of Lord Shiva in the form of a cosmic dancer.
- It originated in India, particularly in the state of Tamil Nadu, during the Chola dynasty, which ruled from the 9th to 13th centuries.
- The sculpture depicts Lord Shiva dancing within a circle of flames, symbolizing the cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction in the universe.
- It is considered a masterpiece of Indian art and a symbol of the dynamic forces of creation and destruction in Hindu cosmology.
- The Nataraja sculpture is not just a religious symbol but also holds cultural and artistic significance, reflecting the profound connection between religion, art, and philosophy in Indian culture.
Details of the Nataraja sculpture:
Form and Pose:
- Lord Shiva is depicted with a dynamic and graceful posture as a cosmic dancer. This pose is known as the “Tandava” dance.
- He stands on one leg, which is raised in the air, symbolizing his control over the forces of destruction.
- The other leg is planted firmly on the dwarf demon Apasmara, representing the triumph of knowledge and truth over ignorance and illusion.
 Multiple Arms and Hands:
- Lord Shiva is typically shown with multiple arms, usually four, eight, or ten.
- These arms hold various objects and symbols that represent different aspects of creation, preservation, and destruction.
- Common items held by the hands include a drum (damaru), fire (representing destruction), and a gesture of blessing (abhaya mudra).
Flames and Cosmic Circle:
- The sculpture is often enclosed within a circular frame or aureole of flames, representing the cosmic cycle of creation and destruction.
- This circle symbolizes the limitless and eternal nature of the universe.
Hair and Ornaments:
- Lord Shiva’s hair is shown as wild and flowing, symbolizing his disregard for social conventions and his connection to the natural world.
- He may wear a snake as a necklace, symbolizing his mastery over fear and death.

2. Shri Bhupender Yadav reaffirms commitment towards sound management of chemicals and waste and reduce adverse impact on Human Health and Environment.

Context:
- Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, participated in the virtual ‘High Level Dialogue on Human Health and Environment’ during the 2nd Berlin Forum on Chemicals and Sustainability on September 4, 2023.
- The event aimed to foster a common understanding of issues related to the sound management of chemicals and waste, provide political guidance, and generate momentum on international chemical management priorities.
Introduction:
The responsible management of chemicals and waste is a critical global concern, with far-reaching implications for human health and the environment. As industries and economies grow, the production and use of chemicals have soared, leading to significant challenges in mitigating adverse impacts. However, concerted efforts are being made worldwide to address these issues and pave the way for a cleaner and healthier planet.
The Importance of Sound Management:
Sound management of chemicals and waste is essential to safeguard both human health and the environment. Chemicals are integral to various industries, including agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, and technology. However, improper handling, disposal, and release of these substances can lead to severe consequences, such as pollution of air, water, and soil, as well as adverse health effects.
Global Initiatives:
Several international initiatives and forums are dedicated to promoting responsible chemical and waste management. One such initiative is the “Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management” (SAICM), which aims to ensure that the production and use of chemicals lead to minimal adverse effects on health and the environment. SAICM operates under the United Nations Environment Programme and has set ambitious goals for chemical safety.
Extended Producer Responsibility:
A crucial aspect of sound management is the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs. EPR places the onus on manufacturers and producers to manage the entire lifecycle of their products, including disposal and recycling.
Mechanisms for Safe Chemical Use:
Efforts are also underway to establish mechanisms for the safe use of chemicals. These include the registration, authorization, hazard classification, and labeling of chemicals before they enter commercial use. Such measures are vital in addressing the needs of the chemical sector, resolving regulatory challenges, and fostering innovation while minimizing risks.

Sound management of chemicals and waste is an ongoing journey that requires continuous collaboration among governments, industries, and civil society. It is imperative that we remain committed to responsible chemical and waste management.
