Recent Context – NCERT’s rationalization of textbook exercise has sparked a debate among intellectuals

Importance of textbook

  1. Not merely to qualify for an exam, but they stand as important instruments of Nation Building.

  2. They play a crucial role in creating citizens in a democracy.

Autonomy of Institutions

  1. Scholars have debated that there needs to be a balance between ideology and truth.

  2. Consequently, knowledge-producing institutions should be autonomous with minimal government interference.

  3. The subject matter thus produced should consider the different perspectives of a topic and aim at developing the youth’s critical thinking ability.

  2. Text Book Development Committee, therefore, has representation from diverse political persuasions and regions of India.

  3. Coming together to write a textbook signals a fine commitment to the values of our republic.

  4. Topics are chosen carefully with appropriate sequencing.

  5. Political events to be highlighted are carefully selected. (Emergency, Gujarat Riots, Cold War, Challenges to Democracy).

  6. The text thus framed is the original work that comes much after deliberation, and any omission or deviation from it is perceived as distortion.

  7. Hence, scholars demand that their names be withdrawn as they do not want to associate themselves with such distorted text.

  8. Such a text does not seem to achieve its citizen-building objective.

  9. If NCERT feels that rationalization is justified, it should not shy away from mentioning the names of those who have decided on it.

Concerns

NCERT is a standard for other publishers as well; any change and deviation in NCERTs impact national education at large.
