1. NCPCR launches National Campaign “Addiction Free Amrit Kaal”

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) launched the National Campaign “Addiction Free Amrit Kaal” on World Tobacco Day, May 31, 2023.

Issue:

The campaign aims to create a tobacco and drug-free India and address the issue of tobacco and drug addiction among children.
-
The campaign is organized by the NCPCR in technical partnership with Tobacco Free India, a citizens group.
-
The regulations implemented by the Central Government to govern the portrayal of tobacco use on OTT platforms were applauded during the event.
-
The proposed COTPA Amendment Act, which includes stringent measures to curb tobacco use, especially among children, was emphasized.
-
Children have been made members of ‘Prahari Clubs’ established in schools to combat tobacco and drug use.
-
Educational institutions were highlighted for their role in promoting traditional practices and holistic approaches to combat addiction.
-
The health risks associated with tobacco and drug addiction, including a high number of deaths, were discussed.

The global perspective on addiction prevention and control was presented, expressing concern about the tobacco industry targeting youth.

The key objectives of the campaign include protecting children’s rights to a tobacco and drug-free environment.

Various initiatives, workshops, awareness programs, and outreach activities are planned to engage schools, parents, and communities in the fight against addiction.

2. Meta and Ministry of Women and Child Development launch the Amrit Generation Campaign: Naye Bharat Ke Sapne

The Amrit Generation campaign was launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) to empower and engage the youth of India.

The campaign invites young people aged 16-18 to create Reels on Instagram and Facebook showcasing their aspirations and dreams for the future.

Participants are encouraged to express their creativity and explore their ambitions, fostering a sense of community and inspiring others.

The campaign is a collaboration between the MWCD and Meta India, the company behind Facebook and Instagram.

The campaign aims to capture the imagination of young people and groom upcoming leaders from India.Participants can create a reel using the hashtag (#)

3. India has emerged as the 2nd Largest Producer of Crude Steel in the world: Union Minister

India is the world’s second-largest producer of crude steel.
-
In 2022-23, India became a net exporter of steel, with 6.72 MT of finished steel exported and 6.02 MT imported.
-

Issue:

The steel sector has shown significant growth in various parameters, including crude steel capacity, production, finished steel production, consumption, and per capita steel consumption.
-
The Steel Scrap Recycling Policy promotes the scientific processing and recycling of ferrous scrap, with six vehicle scrapping centers already operational and three more planned.
-
The National Steel Policy 2017 sets targets for India to achieve a total crude steel capacity of 300 MTPA and total crude steel demand/production of 255 MTPA by 2030-31.
-
The Policy for providing preference to Domestically Manufactured Iron and Steel Products (DMI & SP Policy) has resulted in import substitution of ₹34,800 Crore approximately.
-
The Productivity Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) has attracted investment and capacity addition in specialty steel production, with 57 MoUs signed involving 27 companies, committing around ₹30,000 crore and generating employment for 55,000 people.

The Ministry of Steel is undertaking the branding of Indian steel as “Made in India” to differentiate its quality.

4. Nyaya Vikas Portal for Monitoring of Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Development of Infrastructure for Judiciary

Nyaya Vikas Portal is Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice focuses on Judicial Infrastructure.

The scheme collaborates with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO to provide technical assistance.
-
The scheme aims to enhance the delivery of judicial infrastructure projects.
-
The Nyaya Vikas Portal is a user-friendly and transparent web portal associated with the scheme.
-
The portal facilitates better implementation and monitoring of judicial infrastructural projects.

5. Union Cabinet approves continuation of Central Sector Scheme of ‘Exploration of Coal and Lignite Scheme’
Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the continuation of the “Exploration of Coal and Lignite Scheme.”
-
The scheme will have an estimated expenditure of Rs. 2980 crore from 2021-22 to 2025-26.

Issue:
-
-
-
The exploration is conducted in two stages: Promotional (Regional) Exploration and Detailed Exploration in Non-Coal India Limited blocks.
-
Rs. 1650 crore will be allocated for Promotional (Regional) Exploration, and Rs. 1330 crore for Detailed Drilling in Non-CIL areas.
-
Approximately 1300 sq. km area will be covered under Regional exploration, while 650 sq. km area will be covered under Detailed exploration.
-
The purpose of exploration is to determine and estimate coal resources in the country, which helps in preparing detailed project reports for coal mining.
-
Geological reports prepared through this exploration are used for auctioning new coal blocks, and the cost is recovered from successful allocatees.
