1. Govt. sets up new panel to review all NSO data.
Topic: GS2.
Context:
- The Indian government has established a new internal oversight mechanism for official data by revamping the Standing Committee on Economic Statistics (SCES).
More information on this news:
- The SCES has been replaced by the Standing Committee on Statistics (SCoS), which has a broader mandate to review the framework and results of all surveys conducted under the National Statistical Office (NSO).
- Pronab Sen, former Chairman of the National Statistical Commission, has been appointed as the chair of the new panel.
- The SCoS has 10 official members and four non-official members who are eminent academics, with the potential for up to 16 members.
- The move aims to ensure more comprehensive coverage and address data quality issues that have been raised in the past.
- The SCoS will advise the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on technical aspects of surveys, such as sampling frame, design, methodology, and finalization of results.
- Its terms of reference include identifying data gaps, exploring the use of administrative statistics, and providing input on the publication of survey results.
- The National Statistical Commission will retain the ultimate authority to approve the publication of survey results.
2. China event raises concern over India’s only ape

Context:
- The hoolock gibbon, unique to India’s Northeast, is the only ape species found in India.

- Gibbons are the smallest and fastest apes, living in tropical and subtropical forests in Southeast Asia.
- The conservation status of gibbon species worldwide is alarming, with all 20 species at a high risk of extinction.
- The estimated population of hoolock gibbons is 12,000.
- Threats to hoolock gibbons primarily come from tree felling for infrastructure projects.
- The Global Gibbon Network (GGN) aims to safeguard and conserve gibbons and their habitats through participatory conservation policies and actions.
- Aaranyak, an Assam-based non-profit conservation organization, is one of the founding organizations of the GGN.
- Genetic analysis conducted by the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in 2021 confirmed that there is only one species of ape in India, debunking earlier beliefs of two separate species based on coat color.
3. Commonly found cicada species sheds foreign tag to embrace Indian identity.

- A cicada species commonly found in South India has been identified as a distinct species and named Purana cheeveeda.
More about the news:
- The species was previously mistaken for Purana tigrina, a species described in Malaysia in 1850.
- The Association for Advancement in Entomology corrected the taxonomic identification and excluded the Malaysian species from the South Indian cicada fauna.
- The research team, led by Kalesh Sadasivan and including researchers from the National History Museum in the U.K., discovered the differences in male genitalia and operculum that distinguished the species.
- The researchers highlight that the gradual disappearance of these cicadas may indicate declining soil and vegetation quality.
4. How gaps in cloud system configuration could expose sensitive user data.

- A survey by Thales Cloud Security found that 35% of organizations in India experienced data breaches in a cloud environment last year.
- 68% of businesses in India and 75% globally reported that over 40% of their data stored in the cloud is classified as sensitive.
Instances of frequent data breaches in India and issues associated with it:
- Recent breaches in India include the alleged exposure of personal data through the CoWIN portal, HR management portal myrocket.co, ICICI Bank, and Leverage EDU.
- Cloud storage is the method of storing digital data on off-site servers, accessed either publicly or through private internet connections.
- Companies use cloud storage to store, access, and maintain data without the need for investing in data centers.
- Risks associated with cloud storage include legacy system vulnerabilities, weak authentication practices, insecure APIs, inadequate security controls, human error, and inadequate encryption.
- Legacy systems can weaken the cloud storage setup due to known vulnerabilities, lack of support or upgrades, and inability to support advanced encryption techniques.
- Data breaches and data exposures in the cloud should be treated identically, as both require close monitoring and protection of sensitive information.
- System misconfigurations in cloud storage can expose user data and compromise security, often due to inadequate security configurations or weaknesses in software.
- The responsibility for data protection in the cloud lies with the companies, including conducting due diligence on vendors and ensuring compliance with security measures.
- Risks of data migration in the cloud include exposure of data during the switching of vendors or system upgrades.
- Users can keep their data safe by changing passwords, setting up two-factor authentication, monitoring accounts for unauthorized activity, and being vigilant against phishing scams and illicit activities.
5. SC Collegium’s quiet transparency is driving change
Topic: GS2 – Indian polity.
Context:
- The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, has streamlined the appointment process of judges to the constitutional courts.
What’s in the news:
- The collegium focuses on the quality of judgments of the candidates, which are circulated among the members for assessment and evaluation.
- The collegium’s resolutions now embrace transparency, publicly laying out the requirements for candidates for appointments.
- The selection process considers criteria such as seniority, merit, performance, integrity, and the need for diversity and inclusion in the Supreme Court.
- The collegium follows objective criteria, including seniority subject to merit and integrity, while appointing Chief Justices to High Courts.
- The collegium aims to ensure gender diversity and representation of marginalized and backward segments of society in the judiciary.
- The collegium’s decisions have been supported by the government, which promptly notifies the recommended appointments and transfers.
