1. MoHUA conducts SBM-U 2.0 Planning & Implementation Review-cum-Workshop

What’s in the news?
- The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has fast-tracked projects to strengthen various aspects of solid waste management, used water management, management of current transformers/potential transformers (CT/PTs), and the protection of sanitation workers (SafaiMitra Surkasha) under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0.
- The aim of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 is to make cities garbage-free and address issues related to sewage and safety management, water security, and prevention of drain water from merging into rivers.
- The first phase of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban achieved its target of making urban India open defecation free (ODF) by increasing awareness among citizens and improving sanitation facilities.
- The second phase, SBM-U 2.0, goes beyond ODF and focuses on making urban India garbage-free.
- The mission has revolutionized sanitation and waste management practices and has brought about a significant behavioral change among citizens.
- SBM-U 2.0 has become a people’s movement, mobilizing and involving citizens on a large scale.
- The mission contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and addresses the challenges posed by rapid urbanization in India.
About Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0:
Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, also known as SBM-Urban 2.0, is the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) initiated by the Government of India. The mission aims to make urban areas in India garbage-free and focuses on strengthening various aspects of waste management, sanitation, and water management.
The key objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 include:
- Garbage-Free Cities: The mission aims to ensure that urban areas in India are free from garbage. This involves implementing effective waste management practices, promoting waste segregation at source, and adopting proper disposal techniques.
- Sewage and Safety Management: SBM-Urban 2.0 focuses on addressing issues related to sewage management, including the treatment and disposal of wastewater. It also emphasizes safety measures in handling and managing sewage systems.
- Water Security: The mission aims to make cities water-secure by implementing measures to conserve water resources, promote efficient water management practices, and prevent pollution of water bodies.
- Prevention of Drain Water from Merging into Rivers: SBM-Urban 2.0 emphasizes the need to prevent the merging of dirty drains (nullahs) into rivers. This involves implementing effective drainage systems and ensuring that wastewater is treated before it is discharged into water bodies.
Conclusion:
Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 builds upon the success of the first phase of the mission, which focused on making urban India open defecation free. It aims to bring about a comprehensive transformation in urban sanitation and waste management practices, involving active citizen participation and mobilization. The mission contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
