1. CEC Rajiv Kumar participates in the 11th meeting of the Executive Board of Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB)

Context:
- Shri Rajiv Kumar, Chief Election Commissioner of India, led a delegation to Cartagena, Colombia.
- The delegation attended the 11th meeting of the Executive Board of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB).
- A-WEB is the largest association of Election Management Bodies (EMBs) worldwide, with 119 EMBs as Members and 20 Regional Associations/Organizations as Associate Members.
About Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB):
The Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) is an international organization that serves as a platform for cooperation and exchange of knowledge among Election Management Bodies (EMBs) worldwide. Here are some key points about A-WEB:
- Membership: A-WEB has a membership of 119 EMBs from around the world. These EMBs are responsible for conducting elections in their respective countries.
- Associate Members: In addition to EMBs, A-WEB also has 20 Regional Associations/Organizations as Associate Members. These regional entities are involved in election management and contribute to the work of A-WEB.
- Objectives: A-WEB aims to promote the exchange of information, experiences, and best practices among its members. It seeks to enhance the professionalism and efficiency of EMBs through capacity building and training programs.
- Activities: A-WEB organizes various activities such as conferences, seminars, workshops, and training programs to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and expertise among its members. These events focus on different aspects of election management, electoral technology, voter education, and electoral integrity.
- Electoral Assistance: A-WEB encourages cooperation and support among its members for providing electoral assistance to countries that require technical expertise or guidance in conducting free, fair, and transparent elections.
- Research and Documentation: A-WEB undertakes research projects and produces publications on topics related to election administration, electoral systems, and electoral reforms. It maintains a repository of resources and documents that can be accessed by its members.

2. Shri Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurates ‘SAGAR SAMPARK’ Differential Global Navigation Satellite System to Strengthen Maritime sector
Topic: GS3.
Context:
- The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in India has launched the indigenous Differential Global Navigation Satellite System (DGNSS) called ‘Sagar Sampark.’
More information about the news:
- The DGNSS is a terrestrial-based enhancement system that corrects errors and inaccuracies in the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to provide more accurate positioning information.
- The launch of ‘Sagar Sampark’ at six locations under the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) will enhance the capability of DGLL in the field of Radio Aids to Marine Navigation.
- The DGNSS service aims to improve the safety of navigation, reduce the risk of collisions, groundings, and accidents in port and harbor areas, and facilitate the safe and efficient movement of vessels.
- The DGNSS system is equipped with multiple satellite constellations like GPS and Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) to increase availability and redundancy.
- The system transmits corrections of GPS and GLONASS, significantly improving the accuracy of GPS positioning by reducing errors caused by atmospheric inferences, satellite clock drift, and other factors.
- The latest DGNSS system utilizes modern technology receivers and software to achieve error correction accuracy of less than 5 meters for 100 nautical miles from the Indian coastlines.
- The launch of ‘Sagar Sampark’ aligns with international obligations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA).
