1. Three-day G-20 Agriculture Working Group meeting begins in Hyderabad

Topic: GS2 – International relations.

Context:

      • The 3-day meeting of the Agriculture Ministers under the Agriculture Working Group (AWG) of the G-20 began in Hyderabad, India.

Issue:

      • The priority areas of the Agriculture Working Group include food security and nutrition, sustainable agriculture and financing for climate-resilient agriculture, strengthening infrastructure for small and marginal farmers, and digitalization for agricultural transformation.

      • India, is fully committed to food security and nutrition.

      • The exhibition at the G-20 meeting showcased achievements in agriculture and allied sectors, including waste management, precision agriculture, and agri-innovations.

      • Panel discussions were held on managing agribusiness for profit, people, and the planet, and harnessing the power of digital technologies in agriculture.

      • The events focused on concrete examples, policies, and programs for achieving sustainability in food systems and bridging the digital divide in agriculture.

      • India highlighted its prosperity and knowledge in the agriculture sector and its commitment to promoting organic and natural farming, sustainable agriculture systems, and crop diversification.

      • The discussions aimed to address agricultural challenges collectively and emphasized the transformative power of collective action.

2. India and Africa are natural partners with historical and cultural ties: Union Commerce Minister.

Topic: GS2 – International relations.

Context:

      • The Union Commerce Minister stated that India and Africa share a natural partnership rooted in their historical and cultural connections.

Issue:

      • Bilateral trade between India and Africa grew by 9.26% in FY 2022-23, reaching almost $100 billion.

      • Union Minister Piyush Goyal expressed confidence in doubling bilateral trade to $200 billion by 2030.

      • India and Africa have historical and cultural ties, and their partnership has the potential to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of around one-third of the world’s population.

      • The demographic dividend of both India and Africa can drive global progress in this century.

      • India provides support to Africa, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, in the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family).

      • Collaboration in renewable energy, particularly solar energy, is emphasized, with the goal of achieving “One World, One Grid.”

      • India’s startup revolution and digital infrastructure can be replicated in Africa to enhance ease of doing business and ease of living.

      • Cooperation in logistics and supply chain between Africa and India is suggested.

      • The CII-EXIM Bank Conclave plays a vital role in bringing together business leaders and policymakers from India and Africa to enhance the partnership.

3. PM GatiShakti must be effectively leveraged with Area Development Approach to extend benefits to the nation beyond infrastructure: Union Commerce Minister.

Topic: GS3 – Infrastructure.

Context:

      • Union Commerce Minister Shri Piyush Goyal chaired a meeting on PM GatiShakti with DPIIT and eight ministries.

Issue:

      • The Agriculture sector can benefit from PM GatiShakti by establishing common facilities on agricultural lands through cooperatives and start-ups.

      • The meeting focused on leveraging PM GatiShakti’s integrated platform to accelerate infrastructure and economic growth.

      • Progress was presented on improving data quality, standardizing data layers, and establishing a Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) mechanism.

      • Five new ministries and additional social sector departments/ministries are proposed to be onboarded on PM GatiShakti.

      • Efforts are being made to improve the domestic and EXIM logistics ecosystem, including formulating an action plan for improving the country’s performance on the Logistics Performance Index.

      • Capacity building and training modules on PM GatiShakti are planned for officials at the state level.

4. INDIAN NAVY OUTREACH PROGRAMME “JULLEY LADAKH” (HELLO LADAKH)

Topic: GS2 – Government initiative.

Context:

      • The Indian Navy is conducting an outreach program called “Julley Ladakh” to increase awareness about the Navy and engage with youth and civil society in Ladakh.

Issue:

      • The objectives of the initiative include celebrating 75 years of Indian Independence, conducting awareness drives about Navy career opportunities, motivating youth to join the Navy, showcasing Nari Shakti (Women Power), and interacting with naval veterans and Veer Naris.

      • Outreach activities planned include a Motorcycle Expedition, a band concert, a medical camp, and a football match between the Navy and the Ladakh Football Club.

5. Climate-related policies must take an inclusive, equal and equitable gender approach – Union Minister for Women and Child Development

Topic: GS3 – Inclusive development.

Context:

      • The Women 20 (W20) Summit commenced in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, with the presence of Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt Smriti Zubin Irani.

Issue:

      • The W20 is the official G20 Engagement Group focused on gender equity.

      • The W20 Communiqué was released during the Inaugural Session, highlighting the call to action in key priority areas such as climate change, women entrepreneurship, gender digital divide, grassroots women leadership, and education and skill development.

      • The summit aims to place women and girls as drivers of change and urges G20 leaders to advance commitments on women’s employment, equality, and equity.

      • Minister Smriti Zubin Irani emphasized women’s role in climate resilient action and digital gender equality.

      • Care economy and its impact on job creation, particularly for women, was also highlighted.

      • The W20 Summit aims to develop a collaborative approach among G20 countries to address gender-related issues.

6. VAIBHAV Fellowship Programme announced to connect Indian STEMM diaspora with Indian Higher Educational Institutions

Topic: GS2 – Government initiative.

Context:

      • The Indian government has launched the Vaishvik Bhartiya Vaigyanik (VAIBHAV) fellowship programme to connect the Indian STEMM diaspora with Indian academic and R&D institutions for collaborative research work.

Issue:

      • The fellowship programme will be implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and awarded to outstanding scientists/technologists of Indian origin (NRI/OCI/PIO) engaged in research activities in their respective countries.

      • 75 fellows will be selected and invited to work in 18 identified knowledge verticals, including quantum technology, health, pharma, electronics, agriculture, energy, computer sciences, and material sciences.

      • The VAIBHAV Summit was organized by the Indian government saw the participation of more than 25,000 attendees from the Indian STEMM diaspora across 70 countries.

      • The fellowship programme aims to foster collaboration between scientists of Indian diaspora and Indian higher educational institutions, universities, and public-funded scientific institutions.

      • VAIBHAV fellows will spend up to two months per year for a maximum of three years in an Indian institution, with benefits including a fellowship grant, international and domestic travel support, accommodation, and contingencies.

      • Fellows are expected to collaborate with Indian counterparts and initiate research activities in cutting-edge areas of science and technology.

7. Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu emerge Top Achievers in Wind Energy Adoption

Topic: GS3 – Renewable energy.

Context:

      • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India celebrated Global Wind Day on 15th June 2023.

Issue:

      • The day-long event in New Delhi focused on the theme “Pawan – Urja: Powering the Future of India” and aimed to discuss the progress and potential of wind energy adoption in India.

      • The Secretary of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy highlighted the government’s commitment to achieving the target of 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.

      • Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu were acknowledged for their achievements in wind capacity addition during the financial year 2022-23.

      • The event witnessed the launch of a Wind Atlas at 150 meters above ground level, providing estimates of the onshore wind potential in the country.

      • Various stakeholders, including government authorities, wind turbine manufacturers, developers, financial institutions, and industry associations, participated in the discussion.

      • India ranks fourth in the world in terms of wind power capacity and is striving to reach its goal of having 50% of its electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030 and achieving Net Zero by 2070.

      • The country has developed around 15 GW of domestic wind manufacturing capacity, contributing to its self-reliance (Aatma Nirbhar) in the wind energy sector.
