1. Union Cabinet approves expansion of the Digital India programme.
Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.
About Digital India programme:
- Launched: July 1, 2015
- Purpose: Transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy
Key Objectives:
- Broadband Connectivity: Expand high-speed internet access, particularly in rural areas
- E-Governance: Digitize government processes for transparency and efficiency
- Digital Literacy: Promote digital skills and literacy among citizens
- Electronics Manufacturing: Encourage domestic production of electronic products
- Information for All: Make government information and services accessible online
- Digital Infrastructure: Enhance technology infrastructure, including supercomputing facilities
- Cybersecurity: Improve cybersecurity measures and awareness
- Mobile Governance: Deliver government services and information through mobile devices
- Economic Growth: Foster digital economy growth, e-commerce, and digital payments
Components and Initiatives:
- Common Service Centers (CSCs): Provide public access to online services in rural areas
- Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) app: Access multiple government services through a single platform
- National Knowledge Network (NKN): Connect educational and research institutions through digital infrastructure
- Digital Payments: Encourage digital transactions and online payments
- Digital Literacy Campaigns: Promote digital skills through training and awareness campaigns

2. Union Cabinet approves new Central Sector Scheme ‘PM Vishwakarma’ to support traditional artisans and craftspeople
Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.
Scheme Overview:
- Scheme Name: PM Vishwakarma
- Financial Outlay: Rs. 13,000 crore
- Central Sector Scheme: Fully funded by the central government
- Duration: Five years (FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28)
- Aim: Strengthen and nurture traditional skills among artisans and craftspeople
Objectives:
- Preserve Guru-Shishya Parampara: Promote family-based practice of traditional skills
- Enhance Product and Service Quality: Improve the quality and reach of artisan products and services
- Integration into Value Chains: Link Vishwakarmas with domestic and global value chains.
Benefits and Support:
- Recognition: Artisans receive PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card
- Credit Support: Up to Rs. 1 lakh (First Tranche) and Rs. 2 lakh (Second Tranche) with 5% concessional interest rate
- Skill Upgradation: Training and skill enhancement opportunities
- Toolkit Incentive: Support for acquiring necessary tools and equipment
- Incentive for Digital Transactions: Encouragement for embracing digital payment methods.
