1. Chairman, Central Water Commission Launches Mobile App ‘Floodwatch’ To Provide Real-Time Flood Forecasts

Context:

• The Chairman of the Central Water Commission (CWC), Shri Kushvinder Vohra, launched the mobile application “FloodWatch.”

More about the news:

• The app’s primary purpose is to use mobile phones for disseminating real-time flood information and forecasts up to 7 days to the public.
• The app was developed in-house and is designed to be user-friendly, featuring both readable and audio broadcasts.
• Information within the app is available in two languages: English and Hindi.
• The app’s key feature is real-time flood monitoring, allowing users to access up-to-date flood situation updates across the entire country.

About Central Water Commission:

• Established in 1945, the CWC operates under the Ministry of Jal Shakti in India.
• It is responsible for water resources planning, development, and management.
• Key functions include water resource assessment, data collection, flood forecasting, river basin planning, and hydrological research.
• CWC collects hydrological data on river flows, groundwater levels, and precipitation.
• The commission provides flood forecasts and advisories to minimize damage and loss of life.
• It contributes to equitable and sustainable water utilization through river basin planning.
• CWC conducts research on hydrological processes and water management techniques.
• The commission collaborates internationally on transboundary river and water-sharing issues.
