1. Ministry of Textiles approves 11 R&D projects valuing INR 103 Crores across different areas of Technical Textiles

  • Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal approves 11 projects worth INR 103 Crores, including 9 R&D projects, 1 machine development project, and 1 equipment development project.
  • One project focuses on developing high-strength carbon fibre for strategic applications in Technical Textiles.
  • Projects include Protech, Meditech, Mobiltech, Buildtech, Smart Textiles, and Sustainable Textiles.
  • Research projects led by institutes and research bodies include CSIR-NAL, ATIRA, NITRA, IIT Delhi, ICT- Mumbai, NIT-Jalandhar, and Colorjet India Ltd.
  • The Minister reviewed progress of various components of the National Technical Textiles Mission, including sanctioned R&D products, applications under General Guidelines, Quality Control Orders, R&D patent guidelines, and outreach activities.

National Technical Textile Mission
 

  • The government had approved a National Technical Textiles Mission for 4 years (2020-21 to 2023-24) with an outlay of Rs.1480 crores.
  • The mission aims to develop the usage of technical textiles in various flagship missions and strategic sectors.
  • The use of technical textiles in agriculture, aquaculture, dairy, poultry, etc. will improve cost economy, water and soil conservation, agricultural productivity, and higher income for farmers.
  • The mission will promote innovation among young engineering/technology/science standards and graduates, create innovation and incubation centres, and promote’start-up’ and ventures.
  • A sub-component of the research will focus on developing biodegradable technical textiles materials and equipment for environmentally sustainable disposal of used textiles.
  • The mission will also develop indigenous machineries and process equipment for technical textiles to promote ‘Make In India’ and enable industry competitiveness.
  • Six courses for skill development in the Technical Textiles sector have been on-boarded on the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).

Technical Textiles:

  • Technical Textiles are textile products that are manufactured primarily for their functionality and use rather than aesthetic appeal.
  • They are designed to have high levels of physical, mechanical, thermal, and/or chemical properties for use in specific applications within industrial sectors such as earthworks, construction, civil engineering, transport, defense, medical, and healthcare.
