1. Government appoints Shri Ramesh Babu V as Member in Central Electricity Regulatory Commission

Context
● Shri Ramesh Babu V. was sworn in as a Member of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) on May 21, 2024, a body responsible for regulating tariffs and promoting efficiency and investment in India’s electricity industry.

 Analysis of the news:

  • Shri Ramesh Babu V. took oath as Member of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) on May 21, 2024.
  • The oath was administered by the Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R. K. Singh.
  • He was the Director (Operations) at NTPC from May 2020 until his retirement and has held various positions within NTPC.
 Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC):
● The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) was established under the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998, and continues under the Electricity Act, 2003.

CERC consists of a Chairperson, three Members, and the Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority as an ex-officio Member.

● CERC’s major functions include:

  • Regulating tariffs of central government-owned generating companies.
  • Regulating tariffs for generating companies operating across multiple states.
  • Regulating inter-state electricity transmission.
  • Determining tariffs for inter-state electricity transmission.

Additional functions under the Electricity Act, 2003:
