DRDO’s ABHYAS, a high-speed expendable aerial target, completed six consecutive developmental trials at Chandipur, Odisha. These tests validated its enhanced capabilities, including improved radar cross-section and autonomous flight features. The system, developed for realistic threat simulations, is set for production with strong potential for defence training and export.

ABHYAS:

ABHYAS is a High Speed Expendable Aerial Target developed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation). It has successfully completed 10 developmental trials, demonstrating reliability and capability. Designed for realistic threat scenario simulations, ABHYAS aids in training weapon systems. The system features improved Radar Cross Section, Visual, and Infrared augmentation systems for enhanced performance. It operates autonomously using an autopilot system and is controlled via a laptop-based Ground Control System. ABHYAS includes features for pre-flight checks, autonomous flight, and data recording for post-flight analysis. Developed by DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment, it involves production collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Larsen & Toubro. The booster is developed by Advanced Systems Laboratory, and the navigation system is managed by Research Centre Imarat. ABHYAS is poised for production with identified agencies and is cost-effective with potential for export.
