The work of these officers is to represent India abroad. They work in the embassy or secretariat made by India abroad and work according to the rules there.
Just as the Government of India appoints IAS and IPS officers in every district and state to run its system in the country and ensure that its policies are followed, in the same way, IFS officers are appointed to represent India in foreign countries, make policies etc. is done.
Who do IFS officers work under?
As far as the ministry of government in which the IFS officer works, they work completely under the Government of India. It means to say that there is no control, interference etc. by the state government of any state of the country on them. They are completely responsible to the Government of India and report to the same. In the Government of India too, they have to report to the Ministry of External Affairs or the Foreign Department only.
At present, the External Affairs Minister of India is Mr. Subramaniam Jaishankar. So, in such a situation, they report to him only or to the Secretary of the Foreign Department and other dignitaries under him. The orders for their appointment, service extension, suspension, transfer etc. are also issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.
This is How an IFS Officer is Made
Like IAS and IPS officers, one can become an IFS officer by passing the civil services exam organized by UPSC. This examination is held every year. Candidates who crack it can get this post on two bases. First, you can keep it in your preference and become an IFS officer after cracking the exam. Second, your selection for this service by the UPSC board is based on marks obtained in the exam.
The Functions of an IFS Officer
The job of the IFS depends on the profile of the officers. Usually, they work as ambassadors and diplomats in the Indian Embassy of a country, strengthening the relationship with that country and helping the Indians present in that country. It has to establish good relations between the two countries by staying in different positions, resolving any kind of dispute through negotiation and representing India in international organizations like the United Nations, and UNSC. Along with this, their help is also taken in the matters of security and foreign policy of the country. IFS officers work to strengthen relations with other countries and international organizations during their posting abroad. Along with solving the problems of the citizens of that country living there, they also strengthen the cultural ties with that country.
Tips to Become an IFS Officer
Know some of the best tips which are given below-
- The first paper (Preliminary exam) is of 200 marks and the second paper is of 600 marks in which you have to get good marks. Based on this only you go to the further process.
- Should have a good command of English and General Knowledge.
- You should always prepare for the exam based on the main exam.
- Give your study time of 10 to 12 hours. Keep making notes of whatever you read in your language so that when you have to read the same topic again, you can easily understand the topic by reading the notes.
- Read newspapers regularly and keep an eye on events related to political, economic, social, foreign trade, and foreign relations in the country and abroad.
- Your better self-confidence will help you in the interview round.
The Basic Salary of an IFS Officer
After completing the training, an IFS officer joins the Ministry of External Affairs as Under Secretary. At present, as per the seventh pay scale, their total salary is around Rs 60,000. Apart from basic salary, this includes HRA, DA, TA and other allowances. Whereas if the candidate gets a post abroad, his pay scale is much higher than this. In this situation, they can get a salary of Rs 2.40 lakh under Special Foreign Allowance. This salary also depends on the country of posting.

Special Foreign Allowances For an IFS Officer
The total salary of an IFS at the time of joining the ministry as an Under Secretary is around Rs.60,000. It consists of Basic Pay + HRA + DA + TA + other allowances.
