1. Public awareness campaigns organised to improve health of oceans through collective action and large-scale community participation (Janbhagidari)

Topic: GS2 – Government initiative.

Context:

      • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India is celebrating World Environment Day 2023 with a focus on the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).

Issue:

      • The Zoological Survey of India organized events in Patna to mobilize the masses for Mission LiFE, including reaching out to students and locals for water conservation awareness.

      • The GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment conducted a cleanliness drive on the Pauri-Srinagar highway, collected 14 kg of plastic waste, and planted multi-purpose trees in the Upper Bhaktiyana region to promote biodiversity and healthy lifestyles.

      • The National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management conducted a sea floor clean-up and awareness drive in Keelakarai, Tamil Nadu, involving local fishermen and divers who recovered 22 kg of seafloor litter. They also educated fishermen on responsible fishing practices and the importance of recycling and managing fishing-related litter.

      • The event aimed to raise awareness about Mission LiFE, promote responsible environmental practices, and protect the marine ecosystem and biodiversity.

      • Participants in these events took the LiFE pledge to adopt environmentally friendly habits and safeguard the environment.

2. In a big boost to off-shore wind energy projects, Government gives complete waiver of ISTS charges for 25 years to projects commissioned on or before 31st Dec, 2032

Topic: GS3 – Renewable energy.

Context:

      • The Government of India has extended the waiver of ISTS (Inter-State Transmission Charges) to Off-Shore Wind Projects, Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia projects, and Energy Storage System Projects.

Issue:

      • The waiver for off-shore wind power projects is applicable for 25 years from the date of commissioning, with graded transmission charges for projects commissioned after 1st January 2033.

      • The waiver for Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia production units is applicable for 25 years from the date of commissioning for projects commissioned on or before 31st December 2030, with graded transmission charges for projects commissioned after that date.

      • Pump Storage Plants (PSP) projects will be eligible for the complete waiver of ISTS charges based on the date of award of the project rather than the commissioning date, if the construction work is awarded on or before 30th June 2025.

      • Energy storage projects can avail ISTS charges waiver at the individual user level if at least 51% of the energy utilized for charging the storage system is renewable energy.

      • If the COD (Date of Commissioning) of a project is extended by the competent authority, the waiver of transmission charges will continue to be applicable to provide confidence to investors making investment decisions based on the present circumstances.

      • The extension of the ISTS waiver for Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia projects is from 30th June 2025 to 31st December 2030.

3. Shri Parshottam Rupala emphasizes on sustainable fishing practices to increase productivity with minimal environmental impacts

Topic: GS3 – Sustainable development.

Context:

      • The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India launched Phase VI of the Sagar Parikrama program on the occasion of the 75th Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Issue:

      • The program aims to cover coastal states and Union Territories through a pre-decided sea route.

      • Phase VI of the program was organized at Andaman & Nicobar Islands, starting from Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA) – Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Kodiyaghat, Port Blair.

      • The program focused on understanding the Domestication of Tiger Shrimp Project.

      • Sustainable fishing practices that increase productivity and minimize environmental impacts were highlighted.

      • The Prime Minister established a separate Department of Fisheries to support fishermen in improving their livelihoods, and significant investments have been made in the fisheries sector through schemes like PMMSY and FIDF.

      • Beneficiaries shared their experiences and issues, appreciating the impact of the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and PMMSY schemes on their lives.

      • Discussions were held regarding the domestication projection of tiger shrimp, selective breeding, and shrimp evaluation study units.

      • The PMMSY scheme aims to enhance fish production, increase income, and create employment opportunities in the fisheries sector, contributing to food security and economic growth.
