2. Records from lake sediments of Indus River Valley in Ladakh help reconstruct climate variation 19 to 6 thousand years ago

Topic: GS1, GS3 – Geography and climate change.

Context:

      • Ancient lake sediment deposits from the Indus River valley in Ladakh have provided insights into climate variation during the last deglaciation period from 19.6 to 6.1 thousand years ago.

Issue:

      • Researchers reconstructed climate records from the paleolake deposits and identified a cold arid period, followed by a strong monsoon period and subsequent weakening monsoon phase with enhanced El Nino activities during the Last Glacial Maxima.

      • The Ladakh region in the Trans-Himalaya is ideal for studying atmospheric circulations like westerly and Indian summer monsoon, and sediment deposits in lakes are useful for understanding short and long-term climatic changes.

      • Scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences sampled sediments from ancient lake deposits along the Indus River and used various physical characteristics to extract past climate information.

      • The study revealed that a cold arid climate influenced by westerly circulation prevailed from 19.6 to 11.1 thousand years ago, followed by monsoon forcings dominating the climate from 11.1 to 7.5 thousand years ago.

      • Orbital solar insolation then became the key driver of atmospheric circulations, and a wet phase within the dominant westerly period was attributed to an early wet phase of a two-fold H1 event.

      • From 7.5 to 6.1 thousand years ago, the westerlies regained strength during the mid-Holocene, coinciding with decreasing insolation, weakening monsoon, and enhanced El Nino activities.

      • The study contributes to understanding large-scale climate reorganization during the shift from glacial to interglacial climate and provides insights into the evolution of the Indian Summer Monsoon and westerly winds during the deglaciation period.
