1. Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal calls for greater cooperation among BBINM countries for maximising maritime trade potential

Topic: GS2 – International relations.

Context:

      • The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, attended a crucial meeting in Kolkata regarding maritime development in the Bay of Bengal area.

Issue:

      • The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to the Act East Policy and the growth of the maritime sector in the region, with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMPK) acting as a harbinger of this growth.

      • The Government is deeply committed to the economic resurgence of Northeast India.

      • The Minister called for greater cooperation among stakeholders to unlock the value in the maritime sector of the region.

      • The meeting was attended by industry and trade representatives, as well as senior leaders from companies such as SAIL, Tata Steel, IOC, Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd., BPCL, Jindal Steel, and MAERSK Shipping Lines.

      • Key issues discussed included trade through National Waterways 1 and 2 to the North East Region (NER), strengthening trade ties with Bangladesh, collaboration with Myanmar’s Sittwe Port, and capacity enhancements at SMPK through PPP mode.

      • The Act East Policy has been a harbinger of growth for the eastern part of India and neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Myanmar.

      • Successful initiatives, such as the Ganga Vilas river tourism project and the operation at Sittwe Port in Myanmar, have showcased the potential for development in the maritime sector.

      • The Minister affirmed the commitment to the development of the maritime sector and the use of riverine systems for transportation solutions in the region.

      • The meeting also involved discussions with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and allied partners regarding the increased use of inland water transport through River Ganga and River Brahmaputra.

2. INDIAN NAVY’S GREEN INITIATIVES.

Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.

Context:

      • The Indian Navy has commissioned solar power plants with a cumulative capacity of 15.87MW, in line with the government’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.

Issue:

      • Single-axis sun tracking technology with computerized monitoring and control is utilized in these grid-connected solar power plants.

      • Additionally, 16MW capacity of solar power plants are at various stages of execution.

      • The Navy has installed an indigenous retrofit device developed by Chakr Innovations to reduce diesel engine emissions, resulting in a 70% reduction in hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter in exhaust emissions.

      • The retrofit device will be phased in on all land-based diesel generators, contributing to further emissions reduction.

      • Eco-friendly marine bio-remedial agents developed through NMRL are employed to combat oil spills at Naval harbors, effectively cleaning seawater from oil contamination and preventing damage to the marine ecosystem.

      • A 100KW capacity air conditioning plant based on the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide has been operationalized in collaboration with IISc Bengaluru, reducing the use of conventional HCFCs with high Global Warming Potential.

      • Hydrogen is being explored as a potential alternate fuel source, with successful shore trials of a hydrogen aspirated diesel engine completed and pilot trials conducted onboard a ship.
