1. In order to boost domestic production, Government removes ceiling for procurement of Tur, Urad and Masur

Topic: GS3 – agriculture.

Context:

• • • The government has removed the procurement ceilings of 40% for tur, urad, and masur pulses under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) operations for 2023-24.

Issue:

• • • This means that the government will procure these pulses from farmers at Minimum Support Price (MSP) without any limits.

    • The removal of procurement ceilings aims to enhance domestic production of pulses and motivate farmers to increase the sowing area for tur, urad, and masur in the upcoming Kharif and Rabi seasons.

    • On June 2, 2023, the government imposed stock limits on tur and urad pulses to prevent hoarding and speculation, and improve affordability for consumers.

    • The stock limits apply to wholesalers, retailers, big chain retailers, millers, and importers.

    • These entities are required to declare their stock position on the Department of Consumer Affairs portal.

    • The Department of Consumer Affairs has directed state governments to strictly enforce the stock limits in their respective states.

    • State governments have been asked to monitor prices and verify stocks with warehouse operators.

    • The Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) and State Warehousing Corporations (SWCs) have been asked to provide details of tur and urad pulses held in their warehouses.

2. Raksha Mantri & Defence Minister of Germany hold talks to enhance bilateral defence cooperation.

Topic: GS2 – International relations.

Context:

• • • Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and German Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius held a bilateral meeting in New Delhi on June 6, 2023.

Issue:

• • • They discussed ongoing bilateral defence cooperation activities and ways to enhance collaboration, particularly in the defence industrial partnership.

    • Rajnath Singh highlighted opportunities for German investments in the Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

    • The Indian defence industry expressed interest in participating in the supply chains of the German defence industry and contributing to supply chain resilience.

    • Both ministers emphasized building a symbiotic relationship based on shared goals and complementarity of strength.

    • India and Germany have had a Strategic Partnership since 2000 and have been conducting Inter-Governmental Consultations since 2011.

    • This is the first visit of a German Defence Minister to India since 2015.
