1. Vocal For Local movement is getting great momentum across the country: PM

Context:

• Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi acknowledges the momentum of the Vocal For Local movement in India.
• He shared an inspirational video promoting local products.
• PM Modi encourages citizens to share selfies with indigenous products.

Why Vocal For Local movement?

• Boosting the local economy: It encourages the purchase of local products, which in turn stimulates the local economy and generates employment opportunities.
• Strengthening self-reliance: The movement aligns with the goal of making India self-reliant (Atmanirbhar Bharat) by reducing dependence on imported goods.
• Fostering entrepreneurship: It provides a platform for small and local businesses to thrive, promoting entrepreneurship and innovation.
• Preserving traditional craftsmanship: Vocal For Local aims to preserve traditional art and craftsmanship by promoting indigenous products.
• Reducing carbon footprint: Supporting local products can help reduce the environmental impact associated with long-distance transportation of goods.
• Promoting cultural diversity: It encourages the diversity of local cultures and traditions, as local products often reflect regional heritage.
• National pride and identity: The movement instills a sense of pride in Indian products and helps build a strong national identity.
• Resilience in times of crisis: Relying on local products and businesses enhances a nation’s resilience during crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Sustainable and responsible consumption: The movement promotes responsible consumption and supports sustainable practices.

2. APEDA inks MoU with Lulu Hypermarket for export promotion of Indian agri-products

Topic: GS3 – Government organisations

Context:

• The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has signed an MoU with Lulu Hypermarket LLC to boost exports of agricultural products to Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCCs).
• The MoU aims to promote Brand India globally and was signed at the World India Food (WIF) 2023 in New Delhi.
• APEDA will promote Indian agricultural products, including millets, across the GCC region, leveraging Lulu Group’s extensive presence.

Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA):

• It operates under the Ministry of Commerce.
• APEDA’s primary objective is to promote the export of agricultural and processed food products from India to international markets.
• The authority works to ensure the quality and safety of these products, facilitating their compliance with international standards.
• APEDA plays a crucial role in promoting and developing the export potential of various agricultural and food products, including fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, spices, and more.
• It engages in market research, product development, and capacity building to enhance the competitiveness of Indian agricultural exports.
• APEDA also fosters partnerships and collaborations with organizations and retailers, both domestically and internationally, to promote Indian agricultural products on the global stage.
