1. AI’s disruptive economic impact, an India check.
Topic: GS3 – artificial intelligence.
Context:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced to a point where it can create poetry, generate pickup lines, and even pass difficult exams, surprising many.
- The development of Large Language Models and Generative AI has sparked widespread interest in the progress of AI globally.
- ChatGPT, a popular chatbot powered by AI, has garnered attention with its quirky quotes, and Twitter feeds are filled with discussions about the versatile applications of such chatbots.
- Ethical debates surrounding the use of generative AI have diminished as users realize the productivity benefits they gain from using these tools.
- Concerns about job displacement and economic growth with the rise of AI have emerged, similar to the discussions that occurred during the early stages of the internet.
What is artificial intelligence (definition):
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to perform tasks and make decisions without explicit human intervention. It involves the development of computer systems or algorithms that can analyze data, learn from patterns and experiences, reason and make decisions, and interact with the environment in a way that imitates human intelligence.
- AI encompasses a wide range of technologies and techniques, including machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, expert systems, and robotics. These systems are designed to perceive, understand, and interpret information, learn from data, solve problems, and adapt to new situations. AI can be applied to various domains, such as healthcare, finance, transportation, customer service, and many others.
Positive effects of AI adoption:
- A study by MIT economists showed that AI tools increased worker productivity by 14% and improved consumer satisfaction in a customer support setting.
- Employees in LinkedIn’s top 50 companies reported that AI helped them be faster, smarter, and more productive, with expectations of even larger gains in the next five years.
- Restructuring business processes and increased investments are seen as essential to fully leverage AI’s productivity potential, according to Professor of MIT.
- Research suggests that AI could lead to a significant increase in global GDP, with estimates ranging from 14% ($15.7 trillion) by 2030 (PwC) to 7% ($7 trillion) over a 10-year period through generative AI alone (Goldman Sachs Research).
- Experts’ opinions vary regarding the impact of AI on per capita income growth. Some expect a substantial increase, while others are uncertain about the effects.
- A majority of European economic experts believe that a ban on generative AI chatbots could hinder innovation, while a smaller percentage are uncertain about the impact.
Employment may be adversely affected:
- AI technologies can lead to the replacement of human labor, as they can automate repetitive and even creative tasks efficiently and quickly.
- Research by Daron Acemoglu and Pascual Restrepo suggests that robot adoption negatively affects workers, leading to a reduction in labor share, employment, and wages, particularly impacting blue-collar workers and those with lower education levels.
- Changes in the wage structure over the last few decades in the US can be attributed to the relative wage declines of worker groups specialized in routine tasks in industries experiencing automation, according to Acemoglu’s studies.
- Automation and AI may contribute to inequality among workers and have potential negative impacts on social welfare, with early adopters gaining significant advantages and creating a winner-takes-all scenario.
- McKinsey Global Institute’s research cited by the European Parliamentary Research Service suggests that AI could deepen the technological divide among firms and intensify competition.
- AI’s impact on the labor market could be disruptive, potentially displacing middle-class, white-collar jobs, unlike earlier technological advancements that shifted people from lower-paid to higher-paid jobs.
- Goldman Sachs’ analysis suggests that while a significant portion of work in the US economy is exposed to automation, over the years, technology-driven creation of new positions has contributed to employment growth, hinting at the possibility of AI creating more jobs than it displaces.
- It is difficult to draw definitive conclusions about the impact of AI on the labor market, and further research is needed to understand the full effects of each technological upgrade.
Opportunities for India:
- India, as the most populous country, needs to be cautious about potential negative effects on employment, as any adverse impact could have repercussions for the economy.
- The increased efficiency brought about by AI adoption in call centers and software industries could have implications for the millions of Indians employed in these sectors.
- Strict regulation on AI usage may not be a favorable solution, as it could drive away investments and opportunities.
- According to the PwC report, China is projected to experience the greatest economic gains from AI, with a predicted 26% boost to GDP by 2030.
- India should focus on education and training in AI, taking advantage of online education’s wider acceptance after the COVID-19 pandemic. This can leverage the demographic dividend and tap into new opportunities arising from AI.
- AI has permeated various sectors of the global economy, and its impact on productivity and growth is generally viewed optimistically.
- However, there are concerns about AI’s effects on the labor market and society. A significant percentage of American experts surveyed believe that AI could pose substantial challenges in areas such as the labor market, politics, data privacy, crime, and warfare.
Conclusion:
- Governments may need to enhance cyber regulations to address the unique challenges posed by AI and consider tax policies that balance the returns from capital and labor to mitigate displacement and distributional effects.
- It is important to embrace the advancements in AI and equip ourselves with the latest tools to stay competitive in the evolving landscape.
