2. GITA PRESS, GORAKHPUR

Syllabus – GS I

Recent Context – Recently, the government has announced to confer the Gandhi Peace Prize 2021 to Gita Press in Gorakhpur.

Gandhi Peace Prize

  • Gandhi Peace Prize Award for social, political and economic transformation through non-violence was instituted in 1995 (125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi).

  • The Award carries an amount of Rs. 1 crore, a plaque, a citation and a traditional handicraft or handloom item.

  • The President of India confers the Award at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Who gets the Award?

  • Given to individuals, associations, organizations or institutions who have worked selflessly for non-violence, peace and amelioration of human sufferings.

  • The Award is open to all persons regardless of nationality, race, language, caste, creed or gender.

  • The Award may be divided between two persons/institutions considered by the jury equally deserving of recognition in a given year.

Gita Press

  • It also runs a charitable hospital called Kalyan Chikitsalaya in Gorakhpur, which provides free medical services to the poor and needy.

3. Why Cyclone Biparjoy’s path was difficult to predict

Syllabus – GS I, GS III

Recent Context – Biparjoy had some characteristics that made it difficult to predict its path and made the cyclone potentially more dangerous.

Uncertain Path

  • It developed into a very severe cyclonic storm, and then an extremely severe cyclonic storm was longer than the average but not the longest. One of the reasons for its longer stay on the sea was its relatively slow speed.

  • Biparjoy was sandwiched between two anti-cyclonic systems. One of them had the effect of aiding its northward movement while the other was pulling it back. The combined effect was that it moved relatively slowly.

Uncertainty over landfall

  • Cyclone Biparjoy was earlier predicted to proceed towards Karachi in Pakistan. The Indian coastline would have felt the impact, but the landfall was not expected over Indian land.

  • The relatively slow speed of Biparjoy had extended till the landfall, making the process slightly longer than average.

  • Longer landfalls have a greater potential to cause destruction. The most dramatic landfall was the Odisha super cyclone of 1998, the most devastating cyclone to have hit India in recent decades.

  • Usually, cyclones lose their energy very quickly once they cross over to land. But because it could sustain itself for longer, Biparjoy kept moving on land as well, though with significantly reduced intensity.

4. IN THE HOT SEAT

Syllabus – GS III

Recent Context – Reports of Paris Pact threshold being temporarily breached.

Recent Reports

  • The World Meteorological Organisation warned that temperatures in at least one of the next four years would be higher than the pre-industrial era average by 1.5 degree Celsius.

  • The EU’s Earth Observation Arm, Copernicus, has reported that this threshold was breached in the first week of June. There have been earlier instances when this limit set by the Paris Pact was exceeded.

  • But this is the first time that global mean temperatures exceeded the 1.5 degree Celsius figure during summer.

Impacts

  • A long-term breach of the 1.5-degree threshold could aggravate climate impacts, including heatwaves, floods and droughts — several such extreme weather events have had telling effects in recent years.

  • Living with such weather vagaries would require paradigm shifts in areas as varied as agriculture, urban planning, and disaster warning and mitigation systems.

  • The UNEP estimates that $340 billion will be needed every year for climate adaptation, but less than $ 30 billion gets allocated for the purpose.
