1. Sachin Tendulkar begins his innings as National Icon for ECI, to bat for greater voter turnout
Topic: GS2 – Indian polity
Context:
- Cricket legend Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has taken on a new role as the ‘National Icon’ for voter awareness and education for the Election Commission of India.
- An MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was signed between Sachin Tendulkar and the Election Commission for a period of 3 years.
Other ways to increase voter turnout:
- Implementing convenient and accessible online voter registration systems.
- Expanding the use of mobile applications for voter information and registration updates.
- Organizing voter education campaigns in schools and colleges.
- Collaborating with celebrities, influencers, and public figures to spread awareness.
- Establishing polling stations at easily accessible locations, including public transportation hubs.
- Providing transportation assistance for elderly or disabled voters.
- Using social media platforms for targeted voter outreach and information dissemination.
- Introducing voting in regional languages to overcome language barriers.
- Using technology to streamline the voting process and reduce waiting times.

2. LCA Tejas successfully test-fires indigenous ASTRA Beyond Visual Range air-to-air missile off Goa coast
Topic: GS3 – defence development
Context:
- Tejas, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) LSP-7, accomplished a successful test of firing the indigenous Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air missile ASTRA.
- The test took place off the coast of Goa on August 23, 2023.
- The missile was released from the aircraft at an altitude of approximately 20,000 ft.
- The test was executed flawlessly, meeting all objectives set for the trial.
About LCA Tejas:
Here are the key features of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas:
- Origin: Developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas is a supersonic, single-seat, single-engine multirole fighter aircraft.
- Role: The Tejas is designed primarily for air defense, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions. It serves as a replacement for India’s aging MiG-21 fighters.
- Armament: It can carry a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, including missiles, bombs, and rockets. It can also be equipped with a 23mm twin-barrel cannon.
- Indigenization: The Tejas project emphasizes indigenous development and manufacturing, aimed at reducing India’s dependence on foreign aircraft.
- Operational Status: The Tejas has been inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Navy. It is gradually replacing older aircraft in the IAF’s fleet.
- Export Potential: India has been exploring opportunities to export the Tejas to friendly nations, aiming to promote defense cooperation and boost its aerospace industry.
- Contributions: The Tejas represents a significant achievement in Indian aviation technology and manufacturing, showcasing the nation’s ability to design and produce modern combat aircraft.
About ASTRA Beyond Visual Range air-to-air missile:
- Origin: Developed by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the ASTRA is a BVR air-to-air missile.
- Purpose: The missile is designed to engage and destroy aerial targets at extended ranges, beyond the pilot’s visual range.
- Guidance System: ASTRA uses active radar homing guidance, allowing it to track and engage targets based on radar reflections.
- Range: The missile has a range of approximately 80 to 110 kilometers, depending on the variant.
- Speed: ASTRA can reach speeds exceeding Mach 4 (four times the speed of sound), making it a highly maneuverable and fast missile.
- Compatibility: It is designed to be integrated with various Indian fighter aircraft, including the Tejas, Sukhoi Su-30MKI, and potentially other platforms.
- Indigenous Development: ASTRA is part of India’s efforts to develop indigenous defense technologies, reducing dependence on foreign imports.

3. Government e-Marketplace surpasses INR 1 lakh crore Gross Merchandise Value

- The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has achieved a significant milestone by crossing INR 1 lakh crore in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) within 145 days of the current financial year (FY 2023-24).
About Government e-Marketplace (GeM):

- Facilitates procurement of goods and services by government organizations.
- Launched in August 2016.
- Objectives:
- Increase efficiency, transparency, and ease of procurement.
