What is GI tag?
- A GI tag, also known as a Geographical Indication tag, is a form of intellectual property protection that is granted to products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation, or characteristics that are essentially attributable to that origin.
- The GI tag indicates that a particular product has a unique quality or reputation associated with its geographical origin and is produced using traditional knowledge, techniques, or skills specific to that region.
- It helps in promoting and protecting traditional products and fostering economic opportunities for producers from a particular geographical area.
- The GI tag also prevents unauthorized use of the geographical indication by others, thereby ensuring the authenticity and distinctiveness of the product.

2. ‘Sedition law must to retain India’s integrity’.
Topic: GS2 – Indian polity.
Context:
- The Law Commission Chairman, Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, has defended the retention of the colonial-era sedition law in India.
Comments of Law commission Chairman on sedation law:
- He stated that the sedition law is important for safeguarding the safety and integrity of India, considering the situation in various parts of the country.
- The Law Commission’s recommendation to retain the law has faced criticism from opposition parties, alleging an attempt to stifle dissent.
- Justice Awasthi emphasized that enough safeguards have been proposed to prevent misuse of the sedition law.
- He argued that special laws like the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the National Security Act do not cover the offense of sedition, necessitating a specific law for sedition.
- The Law Commission’s report suggests procedural safeguards, including a preliminary inquiry by a police officer of a certain rank and permission from a competent government authority before lodging an FIR for sedition.
- The report does not recommend an enhancement of punishment but suggests increasing the maximum punishment from three years to seven years for sedition.
- Justice Awasthi dismissed the colonial legacy as a valid ground for repeal, citing that several other countries have their own sedition laws.

The voting is usually held in the State Legislative Assembly premises.
