1. Shri Narendra Modi takes oath as Prime Minister for the third term

Topic: GS2 – Indian Polity
Context
  • Shri Narendra Modi was sworn in as India’s Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, emphasising his commitment to serving 140 crore Indians.
  • The ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, included a diverse Council of Ministers and was attended by foreign dignitaries, reflecting India’s global partnerships.

Constitutional provisions regarding Prime Minister of India:

  • Article 74: States that the Prime Minister shall be at the head of the Council of Ministers to aid and advise the President in the exercise of their functions.
  • Article 75: Covers the appointment, tenure, salaries, and conditions of service of the Prime Minister and other ministers. The Prime Minister is appointed by the President and the other ministers are appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister. The Council of Ministers is collectively responsible to the Lok Sabha (House of the People).
  • Article 78: Enumerates the duties of the Prime Minister, including the duty to communicate to the President all decisions of the Council of Ministers relating to the administration of the affairs of the Union and proposals for legislation.
  • Oath of Office: Administered by the President, the Prime Minister must take an oath to bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution, uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India, and faithfully discharge their duties.
  • Eligibility: The Prime Minister must be a member of either house of Parliament. If not a member at the time of appointment, they must become a member within six months.
