1. Cabinet approves Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for RABI Season, on Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilizers.

Context:

• The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the Department of Fertilizers’ proposal.
• The approval pertains to setting Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for the Rabi Season 2023-24, which spans from October 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024.

Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) Scheme:

• NBS is a government initiative in India.
• It provides subsidies based on the nutrient content of fertilizers.
• Aimed at promoting balanced use of fertilizers.
• Encourages the use of various nutrients for crop health.
• Helps improve soil fertility and crop productivity.
• Subsidies are given to farmers for specific nutrients, like N, P, and K.
• NBS rates are periodically fixed by the government for different crop seasons.
• It’s a key element of India’s agricultural policy to ensure sustainable farming.

Importance of Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilizers:

• Nutrient Balance: They provide essential phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) nutrients to balance soil fertility.
• Crop Health: P&K fertilizers are crucial for root development, disease resistance, and overall plant health.
• Yield Enhancement: They promote better flowering and fruiting, leading to higher crop yields.
• Stress Tolerance: P&K help crops withstand environmental stresses like drought and extreme temperatures.
• Quality Improvement: They enhance the quality of produce, including size, color, and taste.
• Sustainable Agriculture: Using P&K fertilizers contributes to sustainable farming practices by maintaining soil nutrient levels.
• Food Security: P&K fertilizers are vital for ensuring a stable and abundant food supply.

2. Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approves inclusion of Jamrani Dam Multipurpose Project of Uttarakhand under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (PMKSY-AIBP)

Topic: GS3 – irrigation.

Context:

• The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the inclusion of the Jamrani Dam Multipurpose Project in Uttarakhand under PMKSY-AIBP.

More information on this news:

• Cost and Funding: The estimated project cost is Rs. 2,584.10 crore, with central assistance of Rs. 1,557.18 crore to Uttarakhand.
• Completion Target: The project is expected to be completed by March 2028.
• Irrigation and Beneficiaries: The project aims to provide additional irrigation to 57,065 hectares, benefitting areas in Nainital & Udham Singh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand and Rampur & Bareilly districts in Uttar Pradesh. 

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (PMKSY-AIBP)

• Objective:To focus on faster completion of ongoing Major and Medium Irrigation including National Projects.
• Implementation:By Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (MoWR, RD & GR).
• Funding:Central Government provides 50% of the project cost, while the remaining 50% is borne by the State Government.
• Coverage:All ongoing Major and Medium Irrigation projects, including National Projects, are eligible for funding under PMKSY-AIBP.
• Benefits:
  1. Increased irrigation coverage
  2. Improved water use efficiency
  3. Reduced wastage of water
  4. Enhanced adoption of precision-irrigation and other water saving technologies
  5. Enhanced recharge of aquifers
  6. Introduction of sustainable water conservation practices
  7. Creation of new water sources
  8. Strengthening carrying capacity of traditional water sources
  9. Construction of rain water harvesting structures (Jal Sanchay)
