1. Atal Innovation Mission Opens Application for School Innovation Challenge ATL Marathon 2023-24
Topic: GS2 – government initiatives
Context:
- The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, YuWaah, and UNICEF, has opened applications for ‘ATL Marathon 2023-24,’ a national-level innovation challenge for young innovators in India.
- The challenge aims to encourage students to solve community problems and develop innovative solutions in the form of working prototypes.
- The theme for this year’s ATL Marathon is “India’s 75th Republic Day,” with problem statements related to areas such as Space, Agriculture, Inclusivity, Disaster management, Mobility, Health, Education, and Skill Development.
Atal Innovation Mission:
- Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is an initiative of the Government of India.
- AIM was established by NITI Aayog, which is the National Institution for Transforming India.
- AIM’s primary goal is to promote innovation and entrepreneurship across India.
- It aims to create a culture of innovation and foster innovative thinking among students and youth.
- AIM encourages the establishment of Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) in schools and Atal Incubation Centers (AICs) to support startups and innovators.
- It provides various programs and challenges to promote innovation, including the ATL Marathon.
- AIM offers internship opportunities and support for young innovators through initiatives like the Student Innovator Program.
- The mission focuses on addressing real-world problems and finding innovative solutions to benefit society.
- It plays a crucial role in shaping India’s innovation ecosystem and supporting the country’s growth and development.
- AIM collaborates with various government and non-government organizations to achieve its objectives and drive innovation in India.

2. Competition Commission of India launches Market Study on Cement Sector in India

Context:
- The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is launching a pan-India Market Study on the Cement sector.
- Cement is a critical input in sectors like housing and infrastructure, with significant linkages to other industries and the overall economy.
- The study aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the functioning of the cement market in India and its state of competition.
Competition Commission of India:
- CCI is a regulatory body in India responsible for enforcing and promoting fair competition and preventing anti-competitive practices.
- It was established under the Competition Act, 2002, and became fully functional in 2009.
- CCI’s primary objective is to ensure a competitive and level playing field for businesses in India.
- It regulates and addresses issues related to anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant positions, and combinations (mergers and acquisitions).
- CCI plays a crucial role in safeguarding consumer interests and promoting economic efficiency.
- The commission investigates complaints, conducts market studies, and takes action against anti-competitive behavior.
- It consists of a Chairperson and members who are experts in economics, law, and related fields.
- CCI’s decisions can have significant implications for businesses, making it an essential institution for maintaining a competitive market environment in India.
