1. Ministry of Civil Aviation launches UDAN 5.1, specifically designed for helicopter routes.

Topic: GS3 – Government Schemes.

Context:

Issue:

      • UDAN 5.1 is the first round of RCS-UDAN specifically designed for helicopter routes.

      • The scheme allows routes where one of the origin or destination locations is in a priority area, expanding the scope of operations for operators.

      • Airfare caps for helicopter flights have been reduced by up to 25% to make flying more affordable for passengers.

      • Viability Gap Funding (VGF) caps for operators using single and twin-engine helicopters have been increased substantially to enhance financial viability.

      • The scheme aims to democratize air travel and provide last-mile connectivity to remote and unserved regions, boosting tourism and local economies.

      • Consultations with stakeholders, including helicopter operators, have helped design the current version of the scheme.

      • Previous rounds of UDAN have already operationalized 46 helicopter routes, benefiting hilly and North East states.

      • UDAN has provided air connectivity to passengers, concessions to airlines operating regional routes, and economic development opportunities to unserved regions.

      • The scheme aligns with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of affordable air travel to remote destinations for the common man.

2. Fastest 5G Rollout

Topic: GS3 – Telecommunication.

Context:

      • The Ministry of Communications has launched the 2,00,000th 5G site at Gangotri in Uttarakhand, covering 700 districts in India.

Issue:

      • The 5G network has been rolled out in all 28 states and 8 Union Territories, marking one of the fastest 5G rollouts in the world.

      • The 5G rollout in India has garnered international interest, with the USA showing interest in Indian 4G/5G technology stack.

      • India has over 100 patents in 6G technology, reflecting the country’s commitment to lead in future technology development.

      • The Government of Uttarakhand has supported the faster clearance and commissioning of telecom services in the state.

      • The connectivity in the Char Dham sites will enable pilgrims to stay connected with their families and the world.

      • The high-speed network in the mountains will aid in disaster management and real-time surveillance.

      • Special programs such as the USOF Scheme, 4G Saturation Scheme, and Bharatnet Project have been executed to enhance telecom connectivity in Uttarakhand.

3. Minister for DoNER Highlights North Eastern Region’s Potential as New Growth Engine,

Topic: GS1, GS3 – Regional development, Indian economy

Context:

      • Minister G Kishan Reddy addressed Ambassadors and High Commissioners in a meeting organized by the Ministry of DoNER for the North East Global Investors Summit.

      • The meeting focused on discussing opportunities and collaboration in the North Eastern Region for global investment.

Issue:

      • The Minister highlighted the region’s potential to become India’s new growth engine and emphasized the investment summit as a significant milestone in its development.

      • Abundant natural resources, agricultural potential, mineral wealth, and renewable energy sources were highlighted as investment opportunities.

      • The cultural diversity and strategic location of the Northeastern region make it an ideal gateway for trade and commerce, particularly with Southeast Asia.

      • Collaboration in the tourism sector, infrastructure development, and niche tourism offerings were encouraged.

      • Significant investments have been made in infrastructure, including airports, roads, and railways, amounting to over 5 lakh crore in the past nine years.

      • The government is committed to fostering an ecosystem supporting innovation, start-ups, and entrepreneurship.

      • Sustainable development to preserve the region’s biodiversity was stressed.

      • Ambassadors expressed keen interest in the region’s opportunities and confidence in the Investors Summit as a platform to explore sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and textiles.

The economic potential of North Eastern India:

The North Eastern region of India holds significant economic potential due to its abundant natural resources, geographical location, and cultural diversity. Some key aspects of its economic potential include:

      • Natural Resources: The region is rich in natural resources such as oil, natural gas, coal, limestone, and tea. It offers opportunities for mining, hydrocarbon exploration, and mineral-based industries.

      • Agriculture and Horticulture: The North East is known for its fertile land, diverse climatic conditions, and rich biodiversity, making it suitable for various agricultural activities. It produces a wide range of crops, including rice, tea, spices, fruits, and vegetables, presenting opportunities for agro-based industries, organic farming, and exports.

      • Tourism: The North East is blessed with stunning landscapes, biodiversity hotspots, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, and vibrant cultural heritage. It attracts tourists interested in adventure tourism, eco-tourism, wildlife tourism, and cultural tourism.

      • Handicrafts and Handlooms: The North East is renowned for its exquisite handicrafts, handlooms, and traditional arts. The region’s unique craftsmanship in weaving, bamboo and cane products, pottery, wood carving, and metalwork presents opportunities for promoting and exporting these products.

      • Hydroelectric Power: The region’s numerous rivers and hilly terrain provide ample opportunities for hydroelectric power generation. The development of hydropower projects can not only meet local energy needs but also contribute to the national grid and support industrial growth.

      • International Trade and Connectivity: The North Eastern region shares borders with countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and China. It has the potential to serve as a gateway for trade and economic cooperation with these neighbouring countries, enhancing cross-border trade, investments, and regional connectivity.

      • Human Resources and Education: The region is home to a young and dynamic workforce. Developing educational institutions and vocational training centres can help harness human resources potential and promote skill development for various industries.

4. India will soon acquire its fastest Supercomputer, and it will start operations by next March

Topic: GS3 – Science and technology

Context:

      • India is set to acquire its fastest supercomputer worth Rs. 900 crore.

      • The supercomputer is expected to start functioning by March next year.

Issue:

      • It will significantly improve weather forecasting with the highest resolution of probabilistic forecasts.

      • The new supercomputer will have a capability of 18 PFLOPS, nearly three times that of the current fastest supercomputer in India.

      • The facilities at the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) will benefit all sectors and individuals in the country.

      • India’s weather forecasting capabilities are improving in recent times.

      • The NCMRWF also hosts the BIMSTEC Centre on Weather and Climate, which includes member states from South Asia and Southeast Asia.

5. AI Supercomputer ‘AIRAWAT’ puts India in the top supercomputing league.

Topic: GS3 – Science and technology

Context:

      • The AI supercomputer ‘AIRAWAT’ installed at C-DAC, Pune, has been ranked 75th in the world.

Issue:

      • The system is installed under the National Program on AI by the Government of India.

      • India is now recognized as one of the leading AI supercomputing nations globally.

      • The AI capabilities of AIRAWAT will contribute to solving pressing problems in various sectors, such as natural language processing, image processing, agriculture, healthcare, robotics, and more.

      • The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) envisions using AI technology to empower citizens and organizations and solve societal and economic challenges.

      • The peak compute capacity of AIRAWAT is 410 AI Petaflops Mixed Precision with sustained compute capacity of 8.5 Petaflops (Rmax) Double Precision.

      • MeitY has plans to scale AIRAWAT to 1,000 AI Petaflops Mixed Precision compute capacity.

      • C-DAC has been at the forefront of high-performance computing (HPC) and AI research, and this achievement adds to its legacy.

      • The AI infrastructure of AIRAWAT will enable the development of indigenous AI solutions to address India-specific challenges and contribute to the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.

      • The system will also support the Digital India BHASHINI program of the government.

      • C-DAC aims to make the supercomputing infrastructure accessible to academia, research labs, industry, and startups at a nominal cost.

      • Startups and MSMEs working in AI domains are being onboarded to utilize the AI capabilities of AIRAWAT.

      • The scalable infrastructure of AIRAWAT acts as a computational cloud platform connecting research excellence centres and academic institutions.

6. FLAGGING IN OF INSV TARINI

Topic: GS3.

Context:

      • INSV Tarini, a sailboat, successfully completed a trans-ocean inter-continental voyage of 17,000 nautical miles after 188 days.

Issue:

      • The “Flag In” ceremony included yachting skills displayed by young yachtsmen and a flypast by naval aviation platforms.

      • The Union Minister appreciated the achievement of the crew, especially the two women officers who sailed for the entire duration and encouraged young boys and girls to join the armed forces and serve the nation.

      • The Chief of the Naval Staff congratulated the crew on their successful completion of the challenging voyage, emphasizing their innovation and ingenuity in navigating adverse weather conditions and conducting in-house repairs.

      • The voyage of INSV Tarini signifies women’s empowerment and opens opportunities for female sailors to explore the world’s seas.

      • The historic voyage took the crew from Goa to Rio de Janeiro via Cape Town and back, spanning 188 eventful days.
