1. VP condoles the demise of Dr. MS Swaminathan

2. PM GatiShakti assesses Six Infrastructure Projects
Topic: GS3 – infrastructure development.
Context:
- In the 56th Network Planning Group (NPG) meeting under PM GatiShakti, six project proposals were assessed.
- Four of these projects were from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and two were from the Ministry of Railways (MoR).
- The total project cost for these six projects amounted to approximately Rs. 52,000 Crore.

3. India retains 40th rank in the Global Innovation Index 2023
Topic: GS3 – development indices.
- Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023: India retains its 40th rank out of 132 economies.
- Improvement Over the Years: India’s GII ranking has improved significantly, from 81 in 2015 to 40 in 2023.
- Importance of Innovation: Innovation is critical in addressing pandemic challenges and driving resilience, aligning with the Atma Nirbhar Bharat vision.
- Contributors to Ranking Improvement: Knowledge capital, vibrant startup ecosystem, and work by public and private research organizations have contributed to India’s ranking improvement.
- Government Departments’ Roles: Multiple government departments, including scientific ones like DST, DBT, and others, have enriched the national innovation ecosystem.
- Role of Atal Innovation Mission: Atal Innovation Mission has played a significant role in expanding the innovation ecosystem.
- NITI Aayog’s Efforts: NITI Aayog has been working to optimize policy-led innovation in various sectors and monitor India’s global rankings, including the GII.
- GII as a Policy Tool: GII serves as a policy tool for governments worldwide to assess innovation-led economic and social changes.
- Collaboration with CII and WIPO: NITI Aayog, in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), is hosting the virtual India Launch of GII 2023 on September 29, 2023.
4. India is committed to achieve the Net Zero emissions target by 2070
Topic: GS3 – sustainable development goals.
- India’s Commitment to Clean Energy: India is committed to achieving the Net Zero emission target by 2070, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- Sustainable Development Goals: India aims to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through research, innovation, and international collaboration.
Following steps have been taken by Indian government to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs):
- Panchamrit Action Plan: India has set short-term and long-term targets under the Panchamrit action plan, including non-fossil fuel energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030, increased renewable energy use, and reducing CO2 emissions by 1 billion tons by 2030.
- PM Modi’s Climate Action Plan: PM Modi presented five elements (Panchamrit) of India’s climate action plan at COP26, including Net-Zero emissions commitment by 2070 and a focus on sustainable lifestyle (LiFE).
- Mission Innovation (MI): India is a founding member of MI, a global initiative for clean energy innovation.
- Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM): CEM initiatives in India include the Global Lighting Challenge (GLC), Street Lighting National Programme, UJALA program, and ‘One Sun-One World-One Grid.’
- G20 Summit Commitments: The G20 Summit adopted India’s ‘Lifestyle for Environment Mission’ (LiFE) and promoted Artificial Intelligence for achieving UN SDGs.
- Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA): India, Brazil, and the United States will lead GBA to promote biofuels and achieve Net Zero emissions.
- India’s Climate Change Commitments: India is committed to reducing emission intensity by 33-35% by 2030 and has achieved rapid renewable capacity addition.
- Hydrogen Energy: India is shifting towards clean energy alternatives, including hydrogen, with policies and incentives.
- Bio-based Economy: India aims for a $150 billion bio-based economy by 2025, with a focus on sustainable biofuels and waste-to-energy technologies.
- Cooling Action Plan (CAP): India’s CAP addresses cooling requirements across sectors, focusing on energy-efficient solutions.
- National Green Hydrogen Mission: India has launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission with a budgetary outlay to promote green hydrogen production.
- R&D Roadmap: A draft R&D Roadmap for Green Hydrogen Ecosystem in India has been released.
- Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus: India launched its first indigenous Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus as part of its efforts in hydrogen technology.
- Strategic Hydrogen Partnership: A Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework for R&D called the Strategic Hydrogen Partnership has been established.
