1. Cabinet approves Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for RABI Season, on Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilizers.

Context:
- The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the Department of Fertilizers’ proposal.
- The approval pertains to setting Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for the Rabi Season 2023-24, which spans from October 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024.
Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) Scheme:
- NBS is a government initiative in India.
- It provides subsidies based on the nutrient content of fertilizers.
- Aimed at promoting balanced use of fertilizers.
- Encourages the use of various nutrients for crop health.
- Helps improve soil fertility and crop productivity.
- Subsidies are given to farmers for specific nutrients, like N, P, and K.
- NBS rates are periodically fixed by the government for different crop seasons.
- It’s a key element of India’s agricultural policy to ensure sustainable farming.
Importance of Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilizers:

2. Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approves inclusion of Jamrani Dam Multipurpose Project of Uttarakhand under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (PMKSY-AIBP)
Topic: GS3 – irrigation.
Context:
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the inclusion of the Jamrani Dam Multipurpose Project in Uttarakhand under PMKSY-AIBP.
More information on this news:
- Cost and Funding: The estimated project cost is Rs. 2,584.10 crore, with central assistance of Rs. 1,557.18 crore to Uttarakhand.
- Completion Target: The project is expected to be completed by March 2028.
- Irrigation and Beneficiaries: The project aims to provide additional irrigation to 57,065 hectares, benefitting areas in Nainital & Udham Singh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand and Rampur & Bareilly districts in Uttar Pradesh.
Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (PMKSY-AIBP)
- Objective:To focus on faster completion of ongoing Major and Medium Irrigation including National Projects.
- Implementation:By Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (MoWR, RD & GR).
- Funding:Central Government provides 50% of the project cost, while the remaining 50% is borne by the State Government.
- Coverage:All ongoing Major and Medium Irrigation projects, including National Projects, are eligible for funding under PMKSY-AIBP.
- Benefits:
- Increased irrigation coverage
- Improved water use efficiency
- Reduced wastage of water
- Enhanced adoption of precision-irrigation and other water saving technologies
- Enhanced recharge of aquifers
- Introduction of sustainable water conservation practices
- Creation of new water sources
- Strengthening carrying capacity of traditional water sources
- Construction of rain water harvesting structures (Jal Sanchay)
