1. PRESIDENT OF INDIA GRACES THE CONSTITUTION DAY CELEBRATIONS ORGANISED BY THE SUPREME COURT OF INDIA

Context:

• President Droupadi Murmu attended Constitution Day Celebrations in New Delhi on November 26, 2023.

Views expressed by the President:

• Emphasis on celebrating values enshrined in the Constitution: justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
• Recognition of these values as guiding principles for the nation-building process.
• President highlighted the importance of making justice accessible to all citizens.
• Identified barriers to justice, including cost and language comprehension.
• Advocated for a more varied representation in the judiciary to better serve the cause of justice.
• Proposed the creation of an All-India Judicial Service to recruit judges from diverse backgrounds.
• Called for a merit-based, competitive, and transparent process to select judges.
• Stressed the need to make the overall justice system more citizen-centric.
• Acknowledged the historical influence of colonialism on existing systems and called for conscious efforts in decolonization.
• Emphasized that the Constitution comes alive when its contents are put into practice through interpretation.
• Commended the Supreme Court for its role as the final interpreter of the founding document.
• Appreciated the Supreme Court’s contribution to raising the standards of jurisprudence.
• Expressed confidence that a vibrant judiciary ensures the health of the democracy.
