1. Bill seeks to remove CJI from panel that picks CEC and ECs.

Context:
- The Union government has introduced a Bill on Thursday, which has sparked controversy, aiming to remove the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the panel responsible for selecting the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.
More about the news:
- Under the proposed changes, the three-member panel that selects these officials will now include a Union Cabinet Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and the Prime Minister as its head. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) will no longer be a part of this panel.
- Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023, in the Rajya Sabha amidst ongoing disruptions related to Manipur.
- The Opposition has swiftly criticized this move, arguing that it could compromise the neutrality of the Election Commission (EC).
- The new selection panel would effectively consist of two members from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – the Prime Minister and the Cabinet Minister.
2. ISRO gears up for soft landing of Chandrayaan-3

- Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released two images taken by Chandrayaan-3 ahead of its soft landing on the lunar surface.
- The first image shows the Earth as viewed by the Lander Imager (LI) camera on July 14, the day of the mission’s launch.
- The second image captures the moon taken by the Lander Horizontal Velocity camera (LHVC) on August 6.
After landing of Chandrayaan-3:
- ISRO has assessed the current space situation around the moon in preparation for Chandrayaan-3’s soft landing on August 23.
- The moon and Mars are among the most explored and crowded planetary bodies, and Chandrayaan-3 is the latest addition to lunar orbit exploration.
- Increased activities around the moon are anticipated due to renewed interest in lunar exploration, including Artemis missions and Mars colonization preparations.
- The assessment highlights the need for better understanding of the space environment to avoid close-approach threats in planetary orbits.
- As of July 2023, there are six active lunar orbiters, including NASA’s ARTEMIS P1 and ARTEMIS P2, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), Chandrayaan-2, and Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO).
- The defunct spacecraft are Japan’s Ouna (part of Kaguya/SELENE mission) and Chandrayaan-1.
3. Should there be a blanket ban on smartphones in schools?
