Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY’s success, reflects transformative healthcare policies and impacts poverty alleviation, crucial for UPSC aspirants. 

Context:
  • Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri – Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) achieves a milestone with 30 crore Ayushman cards, saving over Rs. 1.25 lakh crore in out-of-pocket expenditure for 6.2 crore hospital admissions.

  • Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri – Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) has achieved the milestone of 30 crore Ayushman cards on January 12, 2024.
  • The scheme aims to provide health cover of Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to 12 Crore beneficiary families.
  • Uttar Pradesh tops the list with 4.83 crore Ayushman cards, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra with 3.78 crore and 2.39 crore cards, respectively.
  • Approximately 14.6 crore Ayushman cards have been created for females, and the scheme aims for gender parity, regional parity, and income parity in healthcare services access.
  • The Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY has facilitated 6.2 crore hospital admissions, saving more than Rs. 1.25 lakh crore in out-of-pocket expenditure for poor and vulnerable populations.
  • The scheme underscores equity, entitlement, and empowerment, providing assurance to deprived families against the financial burden of diseases.
