1. PM declares open 3rd edition of Khelo India University Games

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, declared open the Khelo India University Games 2023 via video conferencing.

Over 4750 athletes from 200 universities participated in 21 sports categories.

About Khelo India Abhiyan:
Khelo India Abhiyan, also known as the Khelo India Youth Games, is a national sports development program launched by the Government of India. The initiative aims to identify and nurture sporting talent in India and create a strong sports ecosystem in the country. The program focuses on encouraging youth to participate in various sports and provides them with the necessary resources and support to excel in their chosen discipline.

Grassroots Development: The program emphasizes the development of sports at the grassroots level by organizing competitions and talent identification programs at the school and college levels.

Financial Support: Financial assistance is provided to young athletes through scholarships, stipends, and training grants. This support helps them meet their training and equipment needs.

Infrastructure Development: The initiative focuses on building sports infrastructure across the country. This includes the development of sports academies, training centres, stadiums, and playing fields.

The defence minister emphasized the importance of Research & Development (R&D) in cutting-edge technology for the development and security of the nation.

R&D opens new dimensions and acts as a force multiplier in utilizing available resources effectively.

India needs to become a technology leader rather than an imitator by increasing in-house R&D funding and exploring new sectors and products.

To become a technology leader, a nation requires substantial capital, robust R&D infrastructure, demographic advantage, and the ability to adopt and create a base of previous technologies.

The government has taken steps to provide a conducive environment for R&D through policies and reforms in areas such as banking, regulation, funding, labour, education, and health.

The population, once seen as a liability, is now viewed as an asset, and policies have been implemented to utilize the demographic dividend through good governance.

The focus is on making the population educated, healthy, and skilled to transform them into a wealth-creating resource.

The youth, with their potential and enthusiasm, are crucial to the demographic dividend, and the growth of start-ups in the country reflects their energy and passion.

3. Government launches SAMARTH campaign to promote digital transactions at Gram Panchayat Level.

The Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Shri Giriraj Singh, launched the ‘SAMARTH Campaign on Promoting Digital Transactions in 50000 Gram Panchayats’ under the Amrit Mahotsav.

The campaign aims to promote digital transactions in rural areas, with a focus on women’s empowerment.

The Minister praised the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for their outstanding credit performance, with the NPA (non-performing assets) coming down from 9.58% in 2013 to below 2% now.

4. India launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission because it believes in the environment.

Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, R. K. Singh, emphasized the importance of adding energy capacity in India to support the nation’s growth.

By 2030, energy consumption in India is expected to double, and capacity needs to be added accordingly.

To meet this growing demand, the government has launched a green hydrogen mission.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) is a government-led initiative to promote the production and use of green hydrogen in India.

To create export opportunities for green hydrogen and its derivatives.

To reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and feedstock.

To create opportunities for employment and economic development.

To support R&D projects in the green hydrogen sector.
