1. President of India’s greetings on the eve of Id-Uz-Zuha.

Topic: GS1 – Indian culture.

 Context:

  • President Droupadi Murmu greeted fellow citizens on the eve of Id-uz-Zuha.
  • She extended her heartiest greetings and best wishes to all fellow citizens, particularly to the Muslim community in India and abroad.

            d-Uz-Zuha, also known as Eid al-Adha or Bakrid, is one of the major Islamic festivals celebrated by Muslims worldwide. Here is some more information about Id-Uz-Zuha:

  • Significance: Id-Uz-Zuha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. It symbolizes faith, devotion, and willingness to make sacrifices for God.
  • Observance: The festival falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It marks the end of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslims around the world participate in prayers, feasts, and acts of charity during this festival.
  • Animal Sacrifice: One of the key rituals of Id-Uz-Zuha involves the sacrifice of an animal, usually a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. The meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts: one-third is given to the poor and needy, one-third to relatives and friends, and the remaining one-third is kept for the family.
  • Prayers and Sermons: Muslims gather in mosques or designated prayer grounds to offer special prayers called the Eid prayers. Imams deliver sermons emphasizing the importance of faith, sacrifice, and unity in Islam.
  • Universal Values: Beyond its religious significance, Id-Uz-Zuha promotes values of compassion, generosity, and community welfare. It encourages Muslims to reflect on the importance of sacrifice and the responsibility to help those in need.

2. PM praises “Vitasta-The Festival of Kashmir” programme showcasing rich culture, arts and crafts of Kashmir

Topic: GS1 – Indian culture.

 Context:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the initiative called “Vitasta – The Festival of Kashmir” that showcased the rich culture, arts, and crafts of Kashmir.
  • The Vitasta program aimed to bring the diverse art, culture, literature, crafts, and cuisine of Kashmir to the entire country.

What is Vitasta-The Festival of Kashmir”?

  • Vitasta: The Festival of Kashmir is a cultural festival that was organized by the Union Ministry of Culture
  • The festival aimed to promote the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir and to showcase it to the rest of the country.
  • The festival featured a variety of cultural performances, including music, dance, theater, and folk art.
  • There were also workshops and demonstrations on traditional Kashmiri crafts and cuisine. The festival was attended by people from all over Kashmir, as well as by tourists from other parts of India.
  • The festival was named after the Vitasta River, which is also known as the Jhelum River. The Vitasta River is considered to be sacred in Kashmir, and it is said to have been created by the god Shiva. The festival was thus seen as a way to celebrate the cultural and spiritual heritage of Kashmir.

3. Cabinet approves Introduction of National Research Foundation Bill, 2023 in Parliament to strengthen research eco-system in the country.

Topic: GS2 – Polity.

 Context:

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the introduction of the National Research Foundation (NRF) Bill, 2023 in Parliament.

More information about National Research Foundation Bill:

  • The NRF aims to establish an apex body that will promote and support Research and Development (R&D) and foster a culture of research and innovation in India’s universities, colleges, research institutions, and R&D laboratories.
  • The establishment of NRF aligns with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) and is estimated to cost Rs. 50,000 crore over five years (2023-28).
  • The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will be the administrative department of NRF, and it will be governed by a Governing Board consisting of eminent researchers and professionals across disciplines.
  • The Prime Minister will serve as the ex-officio President of the Board, while the Union Minister of Science & Technology and Union Minister of Education will be the ex-officio Vice-Presidents.
  • NRF’s operations will be overseen by an Executive Council chaired by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
  • NRF will facilitate collaborations among industry, academia, government departments, and research institutions, fostering participation and contribution from industries and state governments.
  • It will focus on creating a policy framework and regulatory processes to encourage collaboration and increased industry spending on R&D.
  • The bill also includes the repeal of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and its integration into NRF, expanding NRF’s mandate to cover activities beyond those of SERB.

4. DoT announces ‘5G & Beyond Hackathon 2023’

 Context:

  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been organizing Hackathons to foster the development of 5G products and solutions.
  • The DoT has announced the ‘5G & Beyond Hackathon 2023’. The primary objective is to identify cutting-edge ideas with a focus on India that can be transformed into viable 5G and beyond products and solutions.
  • Participants in the hackathon can develop 5G and beyond solutions in various categories, including Healthcare, Education & Governance, AgriTech & Livestock, Environment, Public Safety & Disaster Management Enterprise, Smart Cities & Infrastructure, Cyber Security, Banking, Finance & Insurance, Logistics & Transportation, Multimedia & Broadcast Satellite, among others.

5G technology:

5G technology refers to the fifth generation of wireless technology for cellular networks. It represents a significant advancement over its predecessor, 4G/LTE, offering faster speeds, lower latency, increased capacity, and improved reliability. Here are some key points about 5G technology:

  • Speed and Capacity: 5G provides dramatically faster data transfer speeds compared to previous generations. It can deliver peak speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps), enabling rapid downloads, seamless streaming, and improved real-time communication.
  • Low Latency: Latency refers to the time it takes for data to travel between devices. 5G offers ultra-low latency, reducing the delay to just a few milliseconds. This is crucial for applications that require real-time responsiveness, such as autonomous vehicles, remote surgeries, and virtual reality experiences.
  • Increased Network Capacity: 5G networks can support a significantly higher number of connected devices simultaneously. This is essential for the growing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and smart technologies that require a reliable and efficient network connection.
  • Network Slicing: 5G introduces the concept of network slicing, which allows operators to divide a single physical network infrastructure into multiple virtual networks. Each network slice can be optimized to meet specific requirements, catering to different use cases and applications with varying performance needs.
  • Enabler for Innovation: 5G is expected to be a catalyst for technological innovation and digital transformation across various sectors, including healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, entertainment, and more. It opens up possibilities for new services, applications, and business models.

5. DIVYA KALA MELA will be organised from 29 June to 5 July at Jaipur.

Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.

Context:

  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) is organizing a “Divya Kala Mela” event from June 29 to July 5, 2023, at Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

More about the news:

  • The event aims to showcase the products and craftsmanship of Divyang entrepreneurs and artisans from across the country.
  • Around 100 Divyang artisans, artists, and entrepreneurs from about 20 states and union territories will participate in the event.
  • The products on display will include handicrafts, handlooms, embroidery works, packaged food, home decor, clothing, stationery, eco-friendly products, toys, gifts, personal accessories, and more.
  • The event provides a platform for marketing and showcasing the products and skills of Divyang individuals, contributing to their economic empowerment.
  • The Divya Kala Mela in Jaipur is the sixth event in a series that started in 2022, and more events are planned in different cities during 2023-2024.

6. Centre Provides Financial Incentives to States to accelerate Power Sector Reforms.

Topic: GS3 – Power sector reforms.

 Context:

  • The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, is providing financial incentives to States in the power sector to encourage reforms and improve efficiency.

How the Centre will provide financial incentive to states?

  • States can avail additional borrowing space of up to 0.5 percent of their Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) annually from 2021-22 to 2024-25.
  • This additional borrowing permission is contingent upon the implementation of specific power sector reforms by the States.
  • The objectives of the financial incentives are to improve operational and economic efficiency within the power sector and increase paid electricity consumption.
  • States must undertake mandatory reforms and meet performance benchmarks to be eligible for the incentives.
  • The evaluation criteria for performance include metered electricity consumption, subsidy payment through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), reduction in Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses, reduction in cross subsidies, use of innovations and innovative technologies, and privatization of power distribution companies among others.
  • The Ministry of Power is responsible for assessing State performance and determining eligibility for additional borrowing permission.
