1. Nyaya Vikas Portal created for monitoring the implementation of Centrally Sponsored Schemes

Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives.

Context:

      • Nyaya Vikas Portal provides stakeholders with seamless access to information related to funding, documentation, project monitoring, and approval in the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for Development of Infrastructure Facilities for Districts and Subordinate Judiciary.

Issue:

      • The scheme, initiated by the Department of Justice, aims to construct court halls and residential units for Judicial Officers/Judges of District and Subordinate Courts.

      • New features such as Lawyers Hall, Toilet complexes, and Digital computer rooms have been added to the scheme to benefit lawyers and litigants, in addition to court halls and residential units.

      • The funding sharing pattern between the Central Government and State Governments/UT Administrations is 60:40 for States other than North Eastern and Himalayan States.

      • For North Eastern and Himalayan States, the funding sharing pattern is 90:10, while Union Territories receive 100% funding.

      • The Nyaya Vikas Portal is designed to monitor the implementation of the scheme.

2. NHAI’s First ‘Sustainability Report’ captures initiatives taken for Environment Sustainability

Topic: GS3 – sustainable development.

Context:

      • NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) recently released its first Sustainability Report for FY 2021-22, highlighting its commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

Issue:

      • The report covers NHAI’s governance structure, stakeholders, environment, and social responsibility initiatives.

      • NHAI has made efforts to reduce direct emissions and fuel consumption, resulting in an 18.44% reduction in direct emissions and a 9.49% reduction in fuel consumption from FY 2019-20 to 2021-22.

      • Greenhouse gas emissions from energy consumption, operations, transport, and travel decreased by 9.7% in FY 2020-21 and 2% in FY 2021-22.

      • Energy intensity in Giga Joules/km reduced by 37% in FY 2020-21 and 27% in FY 2021-22, while the kilometers of highways constructed increased.

      • NHAI has encouraged the use of recycled materials such as fly ash and plastic waste in highway construction, including recycled asphalt and aggregates.

      • Over 100 wildlife crossings were created across 20 states to reduce man-animal conflicts and protect wildlife.

      • NHAI has undertaken plantation drives and planted around 2.74 crore saplings to offset vehicle emissions and promote eco-friendly highways.

      • NHAI has increased women employment and employment of marginalized communities, with a 7.4% increase in female hiring and a total 3% increase in the overall workforce in the past three years.

      • The Sustainability Report is a voluntary initiative prepared as per the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines and externally assured by a third party.

      • NHAI’s sustainability efforts open avenues for infrastructure financing known as ‘Green Finance’ as per the Ministry of Finance, Government of India framework.

      • NHAI remains committed to ensuring economically viable, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable projects.

3. FWorld Environment Day 2023 celebrated with a thrust on Mission LiFE

Topic: GS3 – environment and ecology.

Context:

      • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change organized World Environment Day on June 5, 2023, with a focus on the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).

Issue:

      • The concept of LiFE was introduced by the Prime Minister at the World Leaders’ Summit in Glasgow at COP26, emphasizing the adoption of environmentally friendly lifestyles and practices.

      • Mission LiFE includes 75 individual LiFE actions across seven themes: save water, save energy, reduce waste, reduce e-waste, reduce single-use plastics, adopt sustainable food systems, and adopt healthy lifestyles.

      • The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Solutions to Plastic Pollution,” aligning with the “Saying No to Single-use Plastics” theme of Mission LiFE.

      • The Prime Minister highlighted India’s efforts in tackling plastic pollution through the ban on single-use plastic and compulsory plastic waste processing.

      • India has drawn a roadmap for climate change and environment protection by balancing present requirements with future vision, including initiatives like the Green Hydrogen Mission and focus on green and clean energy.

      • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change launched initiatives like Amrit Dharohar and Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes (MISHTI) on World Environment Day.

      • The mass mobilization campaign on Mission LiFE witnessed the participation of over 2 crore people, with more than 13 lakh events and 1.8 crore citizens taking the pledge.

      • Amrit Dharohar aims to promote the conservation values of Ramsar Sites (Wetlands of International Importance), while MISHTI focuses on promoting and conserving mangroves.

      • The Global Call for Ideas and Papers by NITI Aayog invited submissions to promote behavior change for sustainability, and the winners were felicitated during the event.

      • An inter-school painting competition was organized, and the winners were recognized.

      • NITI Aayog released three compendiums: “Thinking for Our Planet,” “Mindful Living,” and “Thought Leadership for LiFE.”
