1. INDO-MALDIVES JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE “EKUVERIN” COMMENCED

The 12th edition of the joint military exercise “Ex Ekuverin” between the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force has commenced in Chaubatia, Uttarakhand, India.

Issue:

The exercise will take place from 11 to 24 June 2023.
-
Ekuverin means “Friends” and is a bilateral annual exercise conducted alternatively in India and Maldives.
-
The exercise aims to enhance interoperability in Counter Insurgency/Counter Terrorism Operations under the UN mandate and conduct joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations.
-
A platoon strength contingent from both the Indian Army and Maldives National Defence Force will participate.
-
The focus is on sharing best practices, enhancing coordination, and fostering cooperation at a tactical level.
-
The previous edition of the exercise was held in Maldives in December 2021.
-
The defence cooperation between India and Maldives extends beyond joint exercises to include assistance with defence training and equipment requirements.

2. ADB, India sign $130 million loan to promote horticulture in Himachal Pradesh

The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $130 million loan for the Himachal Pradesh Subtropical Horticulture, Irrigation, and Value Addition Project.

The project aims to increase agricultural productivity, improve access to irrigation, and promote horticulture agribusinesses in Himachal Pradesh.
-
The loan agreement was signed by Mr. Rajat Kumar Mishra for the Government of India and Takeo Konishi, Country Director of ADB’s India Resident Mission, for ADB.
-
The project will focus on improving subtropical horticulture in the southern areas of Himachal Pradesh, diversifying crops, adapting to climate change, and promoting economic and social development in rural areas.
-
It will benefit at least 15,000 farm households across 7 districts of the state, namely Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Sirmour, Solan, and Una.

The interventions include rehabilitating or building new irrigation schemes, strengthening water user associations (WUAs) for micro irrigation management, and improving water management on 6,000 hectares of farmland.

The project will also create an ecosystem to enhance farmers’ access to markets through community horticulture production and marketing associations (CHPMAs) and cooperative societies.
-
A farmer producer company (FPC) will lead agribusiness development, including business planning, promotion, value-addition facilities, and managing sorting, packaging, storage, and collection centers.

The project will modernize horticulture nursery facilities, improve access to information and communication technologies for farmers, and promote the use of digital agri-technology systems for real-time farm advisories and better CHPMA management.

3. Astronomers spot a surprising solar eruption that maintains constant temperature

Scientists have tracked the evolution of the energy state of the core of a solar eruption that occurred on July 20, 2017.
-
The eruption involved the release of energetic and highly magnetized plasma from the solar corona into space, known as a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME).
-

CMEs can disrupt communication systems and technologies on Earth, so understanding their evolution and impact is crucial.
-
Previous studies on CMEs focused on larger distances from the Sun and lacked observations in heights closer to the Sun.
-
A team of scientists from ARIES (Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences) in India and Southwest Research Institute in the USA studied the thermodynamic properties of the CME core using ground-based and space-based instruments.
-
They found that the temperature of the CME core remained constant as it propagated from 1.05 to 1.35 times the radius of the Sun, despite expected adiabatic cooling due to expansion.
-
The density of the CME core decreased by a factor of around 3.6 as it moved outward.
-
The expansion of the CME core behaved more like an isothermal process rather than an adiabatic process.
-
The findings provide insights into the thermodynamic processes involved in CME evolution and will aid in monitoring space weather.
-
The upcoming Aditya-L1 mission by India will further contribute to the understanding of CMEs through spectroscopy and imaging in the inner corona.
