1. Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar releases draft National Strategy on Robotics for public consultation
Topic: GS2 – governance
Context:
- Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Electronics & IT, released the draft National Strategy on Robotics for public consultation on October 13, 2023.
- The strategy is in line with India’s planning for AI and aims to capitalize on the potential of robotics.
- The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is committed to fostering cutting-edge technology use cases, with a focus on AI and its impact on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) like Robotics.
- The strategy presents significant opportunities for the manufacturing sector, Industry 4.0, and cyber-physical systems.
- India aspires to become a global “Robotics Hub” and has identified four key sectors for strategic development: manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and national security.
- A comprehensive and efficient deployment of the National Strategy on Robotics, termed the ‘National Robotics Mission,’ is proposed to drive India’s global leadership in robotics.
- The Robotics Innovation Unit (RIU) will be established under IndiaAI to facilitate the strategy’s implementation, nurturing the robotics startup, research, and innovation ecosystem.
- The strategy focuses on key pillars of the robotics innovation cycle, including Research and Development, Demonstration and Testing, Commercialization and Supply Chain Development, and Adoption and Awareness.
- Public consultation and feedback on the draft National Strategy on Robotics are open through the MyGov platform until October 31, 2023.
