1. Bureau of Indian Standards notifies standards related to Ayush herbs and products

Topic: GS3.

Context:

      • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has notified 31 Indian standards related to Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) through a gazette notification.

Issue:

      • The standards cover 30 herbs and 1 product, which is a stainless steel neti pot.

      • BIS has established an additional department dedicated to Ayush to provide focused attention on standardization in this field.

      • The Ministry of Ayush appreciates these initiatives and believes that the development of standards and certification of Ayush will boost international trade, ensure product quality, and benefit consumers by reducing costs, enhancing performance, and improving safety.

      • BIS is also working with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to formulate International Standards in the field of traditional medicine.

      • The Ministry of Ayush aims to create a quality ecosystem for Ayush systems to facilitate trade and ensure the availability of quality products and services at the national and global levels.

2. National Training Centre for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India

Topic: GS3.

Context:

      • Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurates National Training Centre for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India

Issue:

      • Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, emphasized the importance of good quality nutritious food in keeping diseases at bay.

      • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has formed a team with State Authorities to crackdown on food adulteration and has a zero tolerance policy towards such malpractices.

      • The National Training Centre for FSSAI has been inaugurated in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, to provide structured instruction and learning experiences in the field of food safety and standards.

      • The training center aims to bridge the gap between existing knowledge and desired knowledge in food safety and standards and will train individuals involved in food businesses.

      • FSSAI has developed the Food Safety and Certification (FoSTaC) E-Learning App, which contains training modules on food safety guidelines for street vendors.

3. PM SVANidhi fostering entrepreneurship and stability among Street Vendors

Topic: GS2 – Government Initiatives.

Context:

      • Shri Hardeep S. Puri, Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Petroleum and Natural Gas, praised the successful completion of 3 years of the Prime Minister Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) Scheme.

Issue:

About PM SVANidhi scheme:

The PM SVANidhi (Prime Minister Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi) scheme is a government initiative launched on 1 June 2020 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The scheme aims to provide support and empower street vendors affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by restoring their self-employment, self-sustenance, and self-confidence.

Key features of the PM SVANidhi scheme include:

      • Access to Credit: The scheme provides street vendors with access to affordable credit to restart their businesses. Vendors can avail of collateral-free working capital loans up to Rs. 10,000, which can be repaid in monthly installments.

      • Digital Payments: The scheme encourages the adoption of digital payment methods by street vendors. It promotes the use of digital payment aggregators and provides incentives for adopting digital transactions.

      • Financial Inclusion: PM SVANidhi aims to promote financial inclusion by facilitating the opening of bank accounts for street vendors and providing financial literacy training.

      • Social Security: Street vendors enrolled under the scheme are eligible to avail of social security benefits, including life and accident insurance coverage.

      • Capacity Building: The scheme focuses on the skill development and capacity building of street vendors by providing access to skill training programs and workshops.

      • Udyam Registration: The PM SVANidhi portal facilitates Udyam registration for street vendors, enabling them to obtain Udyam Registration Certificates, which are beneficial for the promotion and growth of their businesses.

4. The green panacea to restore the wastewater disposed during crude oil excavation and processing

Topic: GS3 – Science and technology.

Context:

      • Scientists at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) have developed a green approach for the treatment of formation water.

Issue:

      • Formation water is the wastewater generated during crude oil excavation and processing, and its disposal can lead to water pollution and harm aquatic life.

      • The developed mixture consists of plant-based biomaterial, biosurfactant (secondary metabolites of microbes), and NPK fertilizer.

      • The mixture efficiently restores formation water, and just 2.5 grams of the formulation can treat one liter of formation water in 12 hours.

      • The team has filed an Indian patent for this development, which has the potential to prevent environmental pollution and make formation water reusable.

      • The treated formation water can contribute to maintaining a sustainable green revolution and support enhanced crop production to meet growing food demands.
