1. Vice-President’s Message to the Nation on the eve of Onam
Topic: GS1 – art and culture
Context:
- The Vice-President extends heartfelt greetings and best wishes to the citizens of the nation on the occasion of Onam.
About Onam:
- Onam: A major festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala.
- Occasion: Marks the annual homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali.
- Significance: Celebrates unity, cultural richness, and harvest season.
- Duration: Usually observed over ten days during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September).
- Traditional Attire: People wear traditional clothing, with women adorning the elegant white and gold saree called “Kasavu.”
- Floral Carpet (Pookalam): Intricate and colorful flower arrangements made at the entrance of homes to welcome King Mahabali.
- Traditional Dance: Kathakali, a classical dance form, is performed during the festival.
- Onam Sadya: A grand feast served on banana leaves, comprising various traditional vegetarian dishes.
- Boat Races: Vallam Kali, traditional boat races, are held in various parts of Kerala during Onam.
- Vallamkali: Boats adorned with vibrant decorations participate in competitive races.
- Pulikali: Folk art where performers paint themselves as tigers and dance on the streets.
- Athachamayam: Grand procession in the town of Tripunithura, showcasing traditional art forms.

2. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) – National Mission for Financial Inclusion, completes nine years of successful implementation
Topic: GS2 – Government initiatives
PMJDY Overview:
- Announced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on August 15, 2014.
- Aims to provide financial inclusiveness and support to marginalized and economically backward sections.
Achievements:
- More than 50 crore beneficiaries banked under PMJDY since its inception.
- Total deposit balances under PMJDY accounts stand at Rs. 2,03,505 crore.
- PMJDY accounts increased from 14.72 crore in March 2015 to 50.09 crore as of August 16, 2023 (3.4-fold growth).
- Around 56% of Jan-Dhan account holders are women.
- Approximately 67% of Jan Dhan accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas.
- 98 crore RuPay cards issued to PMJDY accountholders.
Significance:
- PMJDY has revolutionized financial inclusion in India through digital transformation.
- Financial Inclusion promotes equitable growth and provides affordable financial services to vulnerable groups.
- The initiative brings savings of the poor into the formal financial system, reducing reliance on usurious money lenders.
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY):
- Zero Balance Accounts: PMJDY accounts can be opened with zero balance, making it accessible to everyone.
- RuPay Debit Card: Each account holder is provided with a RuPay debit card, enabling cashless transactions and access to various services.
- Overdraft Facility: After satisfactory operation of the account for some time, account holders can avail a small overdraft facility for emergencies.
- Accident Insurance: Accidental insurance coverage of ₹2 lakh for the account holder.
- Life Insurance: Life insurance coverage of ₹30,000 for eligible beneficiaries.
- Mobile Banking: Account holders can access banking services through mobile phones.
- Micro-insurance: Providing access to affordable micro-insurance products.
- Easy Transfer: Account holders can easily transfer money across India.
- Financial Literacy: The scheme emphasizes financial literacy and awareness through various campaigns and programs.
